ENGLAND’S BIG TEAM THIRTY COMPETITORS FROM SOUTH AFRICA Tho South African British Empire Games team, comprising men track and field athletes, men and women swimmers, wrestlers, boxers, and approximatdy 30, including officials, will be chosen on November 15. _ . Vancouver Amateur Swimming Club hon. secretary has informed Mr J. S. W. Eve, hon. organising secretary of the Empire Games, that several members of his club, which is the foremost in Canada, are keen to visit Sydney for the Empire Games, and he expects that at least four swimmers, men and women, will make the trip. Two girl members of the Vanconver Club, Misses Mary Baggaley and Joan Langdon, are high-class performers, tho former having recently won the 100, 200, and 880yds free stylo chamj)ionshij)s and the latter the 100 and 200yds breast stroke championships of Canada. The times recorded by these ■girls stamps them as formidable rivals for all opponents at tho Games. Following are extracts from the minutes of the last Council for England meeting, held on September 23, also received by air mail; — Following are the maximum number to form the England team: —Track and iidd athletics, 16 men and 9 women; swimming, 8 men and 8 women; boxing, 6 men; wrestling, 2 men; cycling, 4 men; rowing, 11 men; total, 64. Sir James Leigh-Wood will act as commandant-in-chief of the teams from the British Isles, while Mr Evan Hunter will act as general manager of the England team. Two women managers for the swimming and athletic women teams would also bo included. Mr E. J. Southcott, English Cyclists’ Union, will take charge of the cyclists as team manager. The English Bowling Association would also aejjd a full team of lawn bowlers.
