JOYCE MACDONALD'S CLAIMS BRILLIANT SOUTHLAND SWIMMER [By Hookeh.] A’ Southland swimmer whose claims for Empire Games selection will be seriously considered during the next month or two is Miss Joyce Macdonald, who has been invited to compete at the Kiwi Club’s carnival in Dunedin on November 24. Miss Macdonald, 15 years old early this year, won Southland intermediate championships last year, the 100yds free style in 69sec, the 220yds in 2min 56 2-ssec, the 100yds back stroke in 79 4-ssec, and swimming easily to make a race of it she took the 50yds free style in 33sec. In the 220yds Joyce broke Miss D, Symons’s Southland intermediate free style record of 2min 59 2-ssec. Last Juno she established a New Zealand intermediate girls’ back stroke record of 77 4-ssec, only 1 2-ssec outside Miss Ena Stockley’s senior record. At a carnival in Invercargill on October 21 last she made an attempt in an Empire Games trial oyer 110yds to reach the standard of Imin 25seo, and despite the fact that she had to wait on her mark for 25 minutes because the carnival was so late in starting, tliis having a bad effect on her, she registered 88sec for the distance. On the same night she swam third in the 50yds handicap heat in the unofficial time of 29 4-ssec (free style). As a junior girl Miss Macdonald could break 38sec for 50yds back stroke, and can now break 34sec, This brilliant young back stroke exponent is trained and coached bv the former Canterbury swimmer H. G. Smith, who is bringing her along very carefully at this stage ’’of her career She is a pretty swimmer of both styles, has a quiet temperament, and is an ideal girl to train.
