WATER POLO TESTS
MATCHES AT EMPIRE GAMES It is almost certain tliat water polo will be featured at the British Empire Games Carnival in February. It has been suggested that a series of tests between Great Britain, Australia, and the Rest of the Empire would provide Stirling contests, and would be greatly appreciated by the public. The polo matches could be staged at the afternoon carnival at which the diving championships are to be contested—viz., Wednesday, February 8. As the New South Wales and Victorian Water Polo Associations are concentrating upon the sending of an Australian team to the 1940 Olympic Games at Tokio, the meeting of an Australian seven with a British and Rest of Empire team would provide an excellent opportunity of gauging the strength of our representatives. Undoubtedly the standard of water polo in Australia has improved remarkably during the past five years, and those in a position to judge state that last season’s New South Wales representative team would put up a creditable showing in opposition to some of the best European combinations (writes, Mr Dudley Helmrich, director of publicity for the Empire Games).
