TWO NIGHTS TOO SOON

A PREMATURE BONFIRE CHILDREN DISAPPOINTED Behind tie brief reference in lasfl night’s ‘ Star ’ to a call received by the fire brigade to attend a gorse fire in Forfar street lies a story of children’s! disappointment. For some days, past youngsters on Clyde Hill have been making industrious use of their leisure tiine, which ha* been devoted to the gathering of broom and gorse. This they piled into a huga heap in a vacant section. It was their intention to “ Remember the Fifth ”• by setting alight to this to-night. Then some person, malignantly disposed, deprived the children of their pleasure by prematurely applying a match. The blaze was every bit as successful as it would have been had it been staged at its appointed hour. More so t perhaps, because the high wind prevailing at the time fanned the flames to an extent that demanded the services of tho fire brigade. While the brigade poured gallons of water on to the flame* the youngsters responsible for the construction of the heap stood in the background. They also released gallons of water in the shape of' bitter tears aa they realised that all their hard work had now gone for nothing. It was a mean trick on the part of the person responsible for the fire ; and, moreover, a dangerous one, for in the 1 exceptionally windy conditions prevailing at the time strict supervision of such a lire was most essential.
