MINISTER DEFEATED
SIR ARCHDALE PARKHILL LOSES SEAT PREFERENCE VOTES TURN SCALE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, November 3. The Minister of Defence (Sir Archdale Parkhill) to-day lost the Warringah seat to his unofficial United Australia Party opponent, Mr P. C. Spender, K.C., by 2,308 votes. As an example, of how the preferences of the other two candidates went Mr Spender obtained no fewer, than 9,020 of the Labour candidate’s 9,711 preferences, and in the allocation of the preferences of both the Labour and Independent candidates Mr Spender received 14,1-4, compared with Sir Archdale Parkhill s 2,570. The outcome of this contest was awaited with the keenest interest throughout Australia. The Gwydir seat has been retained by the Labour candidate, Mr W. Scully, from the Country Party candidate, Mr E. Bachelor, by 2,461 votes. Mr Corser retained the Wide ißay scat in Queensland by 536 over the So«i«l Credit nominee, Mr G. Nicholas. NEW SOUTH WALES CAMPAIGN GOVERNMENT CIRCLES PREPARING. SYDNEY, November 3. Government circles are preparing for the New South Wales elections, which are unlikely to be held before next February, The Premier intimated that the recent Federal elections had no bearing whatever on the forthcoming State election, owing to the entirely different boundaries of electorates. VOTING FOR REPRESENTATIVES COUNTING PRACTICALLY ' ‘ COMPLETED. 1 SYDNEY, November 3. (Received November 4, at 12.30 p.m.) The counting of the votes for the representatives is practically complete in all the States. The only seat gained by Labour from the Government is Ballarat. . The state of the parties in the new Parliament will be : United Australia, 28. .Independent United Australia, I. United Country, 15. Victoria Country Party, 1. Labour, 29.
