REFUSAL TO PAY FINE
STUBBORN AS HIS 60BSE RATEPAYER SERVES FOURTEEN DAYS [Per United Press Association.] GORE, August 10. Rather than pay a fine of £2 imposed by the court as the result of actions by the Borough Council, a Gore ratepayer went to gaol for 14 days. This was revealed at last night’s meeting of the council as the sequel to an action against a, ratepayer who refused to clear gorse from his property. The Mayor, Mr Newman, said the man was stubborn, and under the impression that as he paid his rates the council should cut the gorse. Councillors suggested that the unemployed do the work as the man was now sufficiently punished. The matter was left in the hands of the town clerk.
