YOUTH BEFORE Gflb’RT Warning the accused that this was hk final chance, the magistrate (Mr J. 11. Bartholomew) in the Police Court this morning convicted Ewart M‘Kay Scorgie on a' charge of theft and ordered him to come up for sentence if called on in 12 months. Scorgie appeared for sentence on a charge of being deemed to be an idle and disorderly person in that he had insufficient means of support, and pleaded guilty to the theft at Seaward Downs of a. bicycle, .valued at £7, the property of John Clark Hillis. Senior-sergeant Packer said that at 1.25 a.m. on August 3 last. Constable Sniythe arrested the accused in Prince Albert road, the accused having no means.' After he was arrested he admitted stealing a bicycle from Seawnrd Downs. The accused was employed by Mrs Hillis on a farm through the Borstal, and on August 1 she and her son were absent from the farm. On their return they found that the garage had been entered and the bicycle stolen, the accused’s old clothes being left behind. .He was before the court at Whakatane on November -6, 1935, on two .charges - of theft, and was sentenced to three years in the Borstal. He served a year and four months, and was released on March 20 last. - The probation officer (Mr J. Garnutt) said that he had work for the accused to go to in . the course of a few days. “ I will give you . a final chance though you don’t'deserve it,” said the Magistrate to the accused. In view of the youth’s age, His Worship said there was no necessity to build- up a criminal record. The idle and disorderly charge would be withdrawn, and on the other -charge he would he convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on in 12 months;
