UTOPIA CLUB'S SUNDAY CONCERT

The Utopia Club staged a very successful variety concert in the Town’ Hall on Sunday evening for the purpose of augmenting the funds of the South Dunedin Unemployed Association. The programme, which was organised mud presented by. Mr A, C. Henden. was of a varied nature, and thoroughly appreciated by the large audience. Mr Alex Swan and his popular band opened proceedings with some popular numbers. The following item introduced Miss Rhoda Rainton, of ‘ The Baffling Bryants,’ Australian vaudeville artists at present visiting New Zealand. Miss Rainton, costumed in male evening dress, rendered two baritone solos in pleasing style. Mr J. Bryant’s contribution took the form of a very clever exhibition of sleight of hand, in which glasses of water, flags, handkerchiefs, and such articles were made to disappear and rematerialise in the most mysterious manner. A feature of this act was the formation of various well-known articles from an ordinary sheet of blotting paper. Miss Rainton followed with a budget of old and hew' vocal chorus numbers, self accompanied, on the banjo. Mr George Cox and his six dancing girls presented a well-executed tap dance ballet, accompanied by the band. The newly-formed Utopian Harmonica Band, under the leadership of Mr Les. Burk, made its first public appearance, and was greeted with applause. A comedy interlude entitled ‘ The Cocktail Hour ’ was presented by Miss E. Pearce and Messrs Ramlerson and Walrich. Miss Rhoda Rainton and Mr Bryan entertained with an unusual musical act in which these performers extracted music from the fairy harp and Kentucky cow bells, and concluded with a musical duet on an unusual contraption introduced as “ The silver organ chimes.” Mr Alex. Swan and his band brought a very pleasing programme to a dose wi+h tlm rendering of the popular ‘ Tiger Rag.’ The introductory announcements were carried out by Mr A. C. Henden through Hogg’s new sound system.
