FOOTBALL

RUGBY EXECUTIVE'S MEETING The Executive Cnumiirteo of the Otago Rugby Football Union met last night, Dr ,V. Perry presiding. The Chairman briefly welcomed Dr P. do (,). S. Cabot, an ex-Univevsity, Otago, and New Zealand player, who hail done much to foster the game in the United States. Dr Cabot stated that thy Eastern Rugby Union of America, of which lie had the honour of being president, wished to convey its greetings and good wishes to the Otago Rugby Football Union and to the New Zealand Union. —lt was decided to writ • to the American Union reciprocating the message. ZINGARUS THIRD GRADE TEAMS. “ While we have allowed this to pass it is not the practice of the union to allow an A grade third team to be withdrawn owing to a shortage of players. as the (1 grade team should have withdrawn,” said Afr H. Harris, commenting on the decision of the committee in acceding to a request from the Zingari Club to withdraw its third grade A team from the competition. It was explained that the A team had been heavily drawn upon to provide players for the second grade team. The B grade team was near the top of the third grade competition, while the A's wore near the bottom. “ It should 1)0 a recognised rule of the union that a team should draw players from the team immediafly under it.” said Mr Harris. The Chairman: It is usual to call an A team the'better team. After further discussion it was decided to accede to the Zingari Club’s request. It was suggested that some suitable rule in Ibis connection be drawn up. BETTER MANAGEMENT WANTED. Air Ryan, president of the Taieri Plains Snb-unioh, appeared before the committee, representing the West Taieri Club, to explain the position regarding the Taieri Plains Sub-union team at West Taieri playing four men from the Otago Union’s team in a game against Allanton, This matter was previously before the committee, when it was explained that one West Taieri team plays under the Otago Union and one under the Taieri Plains Sub-union. On the day of the game with Allanton the Otago Union had postponed all matches, and four players from the Otago Union’s team had been played in the Taieri Plains Sub-union’s team against Allanton. The status of the Taieri Plains Subunion had been raised to second grade from third, grade, stated Air Ryan, and now they had men playinv against boys. It had been a great mistake to raise the grade to second grade. At Allanton men were playing and boys were standing on the bank. Afr Ryan suggested that West Taieri be asked to separate its two teams as much as possible, and in the event of any shortage two men only should be allowed,to be transferred either way. The clubs on the Taieri had a great difficulty at times in getting a full team. He did nob think Allanton should have protested to the Otago Union on the mat. tor. It was decided that the decision of the Taieri Plains Sub-union—that the Allanton protest be dismissed—be upheld. • _ f , *' ' Air Douglas Spedding said that he thoxight they should put a stop to players in the two West Taieri teams taking part in txvo games on the one afternoon—an early match and a 3 o’clock match. It was further decided that the Otago Union be represented at the annual meeting next year of the Taieri Plains Sub-union in an endeavour to reach a more satisfactory arrangement.
