FINLAND’S MERCHANT FLEET. ADVANCE IN STEAM TONNAGE. According to the new issue of the Finnish ‘ Shipping Calendar.’ the merchant fleet on April 1 consisted of 866 ships, totalling 584,655 gross tons, compared with 851 of 510,506 gross tons at the same time last year. _ . I The average tonnage was 59/ gross' at the beginning of 1930, but had risen to 675 gross tons at the beginning of the current year. The increase of tonnage during the year under review is about 74.150 gross Tho major increase is in steamers, which rose from 533 to 557, and from 426,820 to 506,928 gross tons. The number of motor slops has been increased by four of 2.149 gross tons, while the fleet of sailing ships has been reduced from 163 to 137, totalling 46,030 gross tons, or 9,555 gross tons less than a year ago. U.S. MERCHANT FLEET. RELATION TO FOREIGN FLEETS. The United States Maritime Commission has compiled a report showing tho position of the country's tonnage in relation to foreign fleets. There aro 18 liners larger than the Manhattan and Washington, the biggest American ships. The United States is last in rank of the six major sea-going nations in the number of ships and tonnage of vessels less than 10 years old. It is fifth in six nations having ships capable of a speed of 12 knots or more. The total ocean-going fleet of the countrv, including tankers and intereoastal trading ships, numbers 1,444 vessels, with a. gross tonnage of 8.462,000 tons. Ninety per cent, of these will be 20 or more years old within five years. The -Merchant Marine Act forbids the granting of operating subsidies to ships of this age except under extraordinary circumstances. The AA'ailsond Slipway and Engineering Company Ltd. have obtained imiportant contracts for engine repairs and reconditioning of the four wellknown Shaw, Savill motor ships Karamea, Coptic, Taranaki, and Zealandic. Tho Karamea reached London in June from New Zealand, and is scheduled to leave Loudon on September 2 for AVellingtou and Auckland. The Coptic also reached London last J une, but no advice has boon received as to when she will leave England again. The Zealandic loft Australia on July 24 for the United Kingdom. At present she is scheduled to leave Liverpool on December 4 for New Zealand.
