WORK FOR MARRIED MEN
GOOD CO-OPERATION BY LOCAL BODIES SOME DISTRESS AMONG SINGLE MEN [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 9. Satisfaction at the response that has been made to his efforts to pltvce married men in useful work was expressed to-day by the Acting Minister ot Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb), who has returned from a tour, .during which he conferred with local bodies in the North Island and in the principal places of the South Island. “ I set out about six weeks ago,” ha said, “ to place 7,000 married men iu work' for four months. I am pleased to say that as a result of the co-operation of local bodies a number have been placed. In some of the smaller towns' almost every married man available for work has been given four months’ fulltime work to start with.” Referring to single men, Mr Webh said there were certainly a considerable number of them fit for any class of'work, but a large number were too old to work. He was hoping to make suitable arrangements to alleviate th» distress existing among single men.
