NEW ZEALAND INSURANCE COMPANY. ASSETS REACH NEW HIGH LEVEL MARK. [Per United Pijess Association.] AUCKLAND, August 10. At the annual meeting of tho New Zealand Insurance Company to-day tho chairman of directors (Sir James Gunson) said that the resources of the company built upon over three-quarters of a century save a world-wide guarantee of its stability to meet any obligation which might arise. The gross assets had reached a new high level mark at £3,575,392. Premium income for the year was £1,185,635, an increase of £89,066. The underwriting surplus was £83,278. Motor insurance was becoming more difficult owing to the increased speeds and rise in the total accidents. It was also difficult, to operate profitably tho workers’ compensation business because of the statutory extensions of benefits in- various countries. Marine losses had been a larger factor than usual. The total losses of £705,954 were 59.54 of premium income, an increase of nearly 2 per cent. The company’s widely distributed shareholding and democratic nature entitled it and others similarly placed to friendly laws and appreciation by the State of their value as economic units. _ Interest rates were likely to continue around the present level. The meeting adopted the recommendation for a dividend at the same rate as last year—namely 2s a share, of which Is has already been paid. At the meeting of the board subsequently Sir Henry Horton’ was appointed chairman and Mr Oliver Nicholson deputy-chairman.
