JOES FOR SINGLE MEN

MINISTER FACING THE PROBLEM [Per United Press Association,] CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. Having completed his task of providing rotational full-time employment for 7,000 married men throughout the Dominion, the Minister of Labour (Mr Webb) is now giving serious attention to the problem of finding suitable jobs for single men registered as unemployed. The Minister said to-day that he hoped that very shortly there would be a considerable number of men employed on farm development work in the North Island. There were many thousands of acres of Crown lands suitable for settlement, which needed breaking in, and the Government was now considering the question of organising camps on the same lines as Public Works camps, with the idea of absorbing a number of men in the creation of national assets.

The whole scheme, Mr Webb added, would be reviewed on the return of Mr Nash, when all the Ministers would be able to give further attention to the problem. Unfortunately, the South Island did not offer the same opportunities for land development as the North Island, and the question of irrigation would receive added consideration on that account.
