TAXATION RESTRICTION
GOVERNMENT IN EARNEST EXPERTS HAVE INVESTIGATED FOR MONTHS [Special to the ‘ Star.’] WELLINGTON, August 9. “ Tho Government is in earnest over tho restriction of taxation,” was the assurance of Mr Savage, _ when tho cjuestion of tho session’s legislation was discussed, and ho mentioned tho Budget as an outstanding item. An export committee had spent months investigating the taxation system; “ They were given a wide field to work oil; their report should bo ready for Mr Nash to deal with, and there will be no unnecessary delay. We were in earnest about making tho investigation, and we are still in earnest about taxation reduction, notwithstanding what our political opponents say.” The Premier naturally declined to give a hint whether tho sales ami income tax would bo affected, nor could lie say whether the Finance Minister would he able to introduce the aniending legislation in the coming session. “ Revision of taxation,” he added, “ must of course be faced as early as possible, and if it is possible to do anything before November it will be done, but I will not make a promise we might not be able to give effect to. The incidence of taxation is not equitable to-day. Everyone knows it, and we have to alter it, and the fact that Mr Nash and I have had to be away has not helped to get things straightened out.”
