MACANDREW ROAD SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly meeting for August was attended by Messrs H. K. Ross (chairman), R, Finder,, C. Schrick, E. A. Bennett, C. Millar, W. Butcher, J. Patterson, C. Hunt, and P. G. Connolly. The head master (Mr A. MIR. Davidson) was present, and stated that the roll number was 262 boys and 253 girls, with an average percentage of attendance of 93. During July the school was visited by School'lnspectors G. E. Overton, R. B. Clarke, and R. W. D. Maxwell. Their report showed that the school had been organised along modern lines and that the teaching methods are directed towards the development of initiative on the part of the pupils, through directed selfexpression. Social studies are coordinated with radio lessons. Additional equipment includes reference books, material for games, a modern ■projector, 1 and suitable films for visual education. The , special class is ably taught by a skilful and most persevering teacner, and there is convincing evidence that this section is successfully fulfilling its functions. _ _ The committee considered this to have been one of the best school inspectors’ reports received, and conveyed their appreciation to the head master and staff for their efforts. During the month negotiations had been entered into with the Education Board for a comprehensive drainage scheme covering the school and garden grounds. The radio and projector have been well used, the latter being in constant demand by the members of the staff. The advantages to the teacher and pupil of this indispensable piece of equipment cannot be over-emphasised. The illustrations provided by the films are so realistic and clear that the pupils assimilate more knowledge and nave a clearer conception of the subject. Although this projector has been in constant use at the school for the past year it would appear that the benefits of a visual education were not realised in New Zealand, until the overseas delegates to the New Fellowship Conference Stressed the necessity for every school having such facilities. Mr Davidson thanked the _ members of the Ladies’ Social Committee and the School Committee for their efforts in this pioneering work. It was proposed to open the school for a half-day towards the close of the third term so that the parents of children attending might see for themselves teh benefits might see for themselves the benefits the children received by the innovation practice. Accounts amounting to £63 2s were passed for payment.
