After 18 years of service under the Red Ensign, the well-known twin-screw cargo steamer Kumara (8,100 tons) will be converted into a Greek tramp steamer. In the Australian trade the Kumara has borne three names and has flown the house flags of three of the greatest British shipping companies. Now, unless an occasional wheat charter is offered her owners, she will leave the Australian trade to tramp the seven seas in. search of cargo. The vessel was built at the famous shipyard of Harland and Wolff Ltd., of Belfast, in 1919, for tho White Star line’s Australian cargo service. She was named Bardic. Several years later she was bought by another firm famous in the history of Australian shipping—the Aberdeen line, and with a buff funnel and the traditional “ Aberdeen green ” hull, she traded to Australia for several years as the Ploratius. In 1933 she was sold to the Shaw, Savill, and Albion line, and was renamed Kumara to perpetuate the name of one of the company’s pioneer cargo ships. She was the third vessel of the company to bear the name, and it is probable that the name will be given to another vessel when additions are made to the fleet. Greek owners paid only £38,500 for the steamer, with the stipulation that tho refrigerating machinery must be removed. She must also bo renamed. Greek owners, have also bought the Reardon Smith line freighter York City, which was well known in. the Australian cargo service. She was built at Sunderland in 1922, and the purchase price was £63,000. She will also be withdrawn from the Australian trade. THE NANiWA MARU.
