MANCHESTER UNITY

The main item of interest at the ' usual fortnightly meeting of ' Loyal ; Hand and Heart was. the presentation of the half-yeariy balance sheet and 1 auditor’s report, by Perm. Sec.. Bro. 1 G. . Davidson. A satisfactory position 3 was disclosed in all accounts, 1 and was \ favourably commented upon by mem- ■ bers. An old and : esteemed member 1 in the-person of P.G. Bro. T. Flynn i (now of Naseby) received a hearty ; welcome. P.G. Bro. Hall Masters was i the recipient of eulogistic reference , on the receipt of his emblematical certificate at the hands of Prdv. Treas. : Bro. A. Sligo. A progress report' was i received from the lodge’s 1 representative on the Handbook Committee,' and , lodges were requested' to forward their 5 insertions as quickly as possible for compiliation purposes. , The new member _ was initiated, delegates to the Picnic Committee wore'appointed, arid the_ lodge adjourned to enable the executive to carry out the half-yearly function of conferring-degrees. N. 6. Bro. T. Sutherland presided over a good attendance of members at the usual fortnightly meeting of Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge, Port Chalmers. The lodge auditor presented the balance sheet for the half-year, steady progress being shown in all accounts. A percentage of 5.21 per cent was shown ns 'interest on securities The membership to date is 314. The sickness expenses disclosed an increase of £IOO in excess of the 1936 period. Three members of the executive—the Prov. G.M.-, the Prov. D.G.M., and Prov. Treas. were in attendance and were heartily welcomed. This being the first appearance since his recent election of the Prov. G.M. members took the opportunity of ( expressing their appreciation of his service to the order. In his remarks later the Pra. G.M. made complimentary reference to the healthy balance sheet and the general progress ofvthe lodge. During the recess indoor bowls were indulged in. The three, executive officers, with the assistance of P.G. Bro. Masters, succeeded in winning the tournament. A juvenile member of Loyal United was admitted to the senior lodge and two proposals for membership were received. A very fine gesture by members of 1 Loyal Centenai-y at their usual fortnightly meeting was the unveiling of 1 an enlarged photograph, suitably inscribed, of the late P.P.G.M. Bro. B. H. Rosevear. At the request of the i Prov. G.M. the ceremonv was performed b\ the Prov D.G.M., Bro. W. ' Sellar. The late Bro. Rosevear, though a member of Hand and Heart, held the i office of Per. Sec. in Loyal Centenary from 1921 until the time nf his death, i Quiet and unassuming lie was yet one ] of the most consistently ardent work- (

ers in the cause of Oddfellowship, and a splendid friend to the sick and distressed. To him was due chiefly the very healthy condition of Loyal Centenary to-day; In Bro. - Rosevear the lodge has lost a friend and adviser who' will be'very hard to replace.. Eulogistic reference to his sterling character was made by the Prov. G.M., 1.P.G.M., and numerous brethren. The N.G., in a happy speech, presented' Prov. D.G.M. Bro. Sellar with a respect badge in the form of a star. This was suitably acknowledged and the. Prov. D.G.M. later presented P.G. Bro. Davidson with a certificate in recognition of his having passed through the lodge chairs with merit. Bro. Davidson was originally, and for many years, a' member of Loyal Alexandra Lodge, Kaka Point. Representatives of Loyal. Hand and Heart, Dunedin, Caversham, Albion, and Valley responded to the customary toast. 1 Tho usual fortnightly meeting of Loyal Roxburgh was again well attended, interest in the proficiency competitions being much in evidence. One member was admitted to clearance, and it was -resolved that a photograph of the lodge officers be inserted in' the handbook. An invitation to attend the meeting of Loyal Caversham on the evening of September 11 was unanimously accepted, and a committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements. At the conclusion of business a mock mayoral election was staged. Four ' candidates presented themselves, and after each had addressed the meeting questions were asked, and all were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. An enjoyable evening was spent at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Mosgiel, held on Tuesday evening last, members being the guests of Per. Sec. Bro. R. Wylie, and Treas. Bro. R. Aitken. Business was quickly disposed of, and members indulged in various forms of amusement, concluding with supper. Prizes for the competitions were won by P.G. Bro. J. J. Thomson and Bro. J. Thomson. During tho business portion of the meeting a controversy, arose regarding the interpretation of several points in the new ritual, the view being expressed that some lead in the matter was necessary. It is noticeable that in city lodges the old toast list is being adhered to. 1 N.G. Bro. C. M. Isaac controlled proceedings during the business portion of the meeting of Loyal Caversham on the evening of August 4. Two notable visitors were P.G. Bro. Peter Thomson and Per. Sec. Bro. Clouston, of Loyal Lumsden Lodge. The lodge opened in mourning in respect to the late Bro. R. Woodficld. Correspondence was unusually heavy. The lodge decided ' to take four pages in the handbook, and it was resolved that the photographs of Per. Sec. Bro. J. List and N.G. Bro. C. M. Isaac be also inserted in the

production. The per. sec. received the • congratulations of his lodge on his api pointment as a justice of the peace. • Bro. Parker reported on the activities ; of the Ball Committee, a good atten-. 1 dance and a bright function being as- : sored. Two new members were initiated 1 , and two proposals for membership received. P.P.G.M.s present were ' Bros. Hey, Cameron, Lawry, Robson, and Russell. The invitation to attend the official visit of sister lodges to Loyal Dunedin on Thursday next was heartily accepted, as was also an invitation to attend the anniversary celebrations of Loyal Valley. The first function is a church service at St. Stephen’s, North Dunedin, and the second a social function on the Monday evening following, on August 8 and 9 respectively. At the conclusion of business those present were entertained by Dist. Past Grands of the lodge. This is an annual function; and under the able chairmanship of P.G. Bro. W. Mowat a pleasant hour was spent, with numerous novelty items, including ‘ Give Me My Boots and Saddlp,’ capably sung by J. Russell, and the rendering of ‘ The Village Blacksmith,’ with the lodge orchestra conducted by P.G. Bro. Geo. Tombs.
