TYRES WEAR LESS IN WINTER

After tests had been carried out by engineers in a large tyre manufacturing company recently, it was stated that tyres gave better service and wore better if fitted on a motor vehicle in winter than if they were fitted on in summer. It was estimated that up to 30 per cent, more mileage wear could be obtained from tyres by using them first in the cold season. The explanation was as follows:
Excessive heat has a harmful effect upon rubber —particularly the heat of the summer sun and of hot roads. Inversely, the cold air and cold roads of winter cause very little damage to a tyre. Tyres broken in on the cold roads of .winter actually “ cold _cure ” themselves, and enter the spring and summer driving season showing very little wear. As the average motorist does about 30 per cent, of his driving during the late autumn and the winter ' months, he actually gets this 30 per cent, of his mileage almost free, and adds this to the total mileage his tyres deliver. It therefore seems a wise move for motorists to purchase their new tyres as early as possible in _ the winter. Another advantage of this is that skidding is more common in winter because of wet roads, and new tyres, with their full depth of tread, give the greatest skid protection in the winter wh«n r needed;: summer- driv-* ing will ‘then be started on practically new tyres.
