SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

(From Our Balclutha Correspondent.) 'August 8. PERSONAL. Mr W. Sproulo, who for the past seven years lias been salesmian for J. H. Stevenson Ltd., Ford dealers, Balclutha, has received a similar appointment with Ford dealers in Nelson, and left for his new position on Saturday morning. On Friday night he was met by his fellow-employees and was the recipient of a nice travelling rug as a mark of esteem. NATIONAL PARTY. During the past week the National Party organisers have been busy holding meetings and forming branches in different parts of the Clutha electorate. At Glenomaru a branch was formed with Mr A. M'lntosh as chairman and Mr A. Jones as secretary. At Milburn Mr D. Al'Gregor was appointed chairman and Mr J. Ashmore secretary, while at Pukeawa Messrs C. Moncur and C. A. Begg were appointed chairman and secretary respectively. The meetings were addressed by Air J. Roy, M. and Air L. Colbonrne, organiser for Otago and Southland. RUGBY SEVEN-A-SIDE. The annual seven-a-side tournament under the auspices ,of the South. Otago Rugby. Union was held at Balclutha yesterday. Heavy rain fell in the morning, hut the afternoon turned out fine, and' the grounds 'were in fairly good order, particularly the show ground, where all finals were played. In the four grades 27 teams were entered, interest being added by the inclusion of teams from Berwick, Taieri, and Tuapeka Alouth. No teams came from West Otago this year. The attendance of the public was only fair, counterattractions and the weather keeping many away. Some very good Rugby was seen, Taieri in particular putting up a'good showing in the senior grade, which they won after defeating Tuapeka Month in the. final. In second-grade honours went to Crescent, with Union runners-up. Crescent also annexed the third grade trophies,' while High School came out on top in the fourth grade. The tournament was well conducted, reflecting credit on the officials, with Air U. Walker as president and Mr L. Edwards as secretary. The referees also worked hard, and carried out a rather stenuous'joh in a creditable way, this department being in the hands of some hglf-dozen. The other officials for the day were; .Messrs L. Howland and A. Lock (blackboards), I. Stewart (timekeeper), N.-. Hislop. and A. Hayward (broadcasting), J. Al'Noe, J. P. Lyall, N. Gallagher, D. Alilne, and Wilson. Referees were Messrs O. Clarke, G. W. Little,: A.-Gawn, L. Edwards, and H, Pitt. At the conclusion of the tournament, the president presented nice cups to the winners of the senior grade, extended congratulations to the Taieri team, and expressed the hope that they would take part in future tournaments. He also presented the trophies to Crescent, winners of the third grade, while Air Lyall presented the second grade cups to Orescent, and Air Gallagher handed the cups to High .School, winners of the fourth grade. Air Walker also presented the Coronation medals won at the Coronation Day seven-a-side. the winners being Aliller’s Flat (senior). In the first spell tries were secured for the winners by Johnston and Frew (2), Taieri leading 9-0 at half-time. Tho following team has been selected to represent South Otago in tho match with West Otago at Waikaka on Saturday:—R. Rae (Catlins) ; P. Shand (Clutha), j Sutton (Crescent), A. Greenall (Clutha) ; Bartlett (Crescent), D. Brown (Clutha) ; 11. Hughes (Crescent), captain; I. Hale (Crescent), H. Major (Clutha), H. Barnett (Star), G. Henderson (Clutha), R. Orr (Clinton), Currie and Brown (Toko). Emergencies: A. Stanway (Crescent) and D. AUFeeters (Clutha), backs; A. Orr (Clinton), Burgess and AVilsou (Catlins). The team will leave by bus from Balclutha at 12 noon, and Air J. P. Lyall will accompany tho team as manager.

NEXT SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Rugby enthusiasts in South Otago will have plenty to interest them next Saturday, At Balclutha the annual primary schools’ seven-a-sido tournament will be hold, commencing about 10 a.m. In the afternoon the final of the third grade knock-out will bo played at 1.30 between Clutha and Crescent, and at 3 p.m. the semi-final of the second grado knock-out will bo played between Crescent and Valley, winners and runners-up respectively in the banner competition. Tho final of _ the schools’ seven-a-side will bo sandwiched in between these two matches. Tho South Otago team will travel to Waikaka to play West Otago. On tho 21st the final of tho second grado knock-out will bo played at Balclutha between Union and the winners of next Saturday’s match, and the semi-final of tho senior knock-out will bo played between Clinton and Crescent. Clutha have tho bye, and will journey to Dunedin to play Pirates. On August 28 South Otago will play the touring Aletropolitan team at Balclutha. On September 4 they will play Eastern Districts, and the season should finish on September 18, when the final of the senior knock-out will be played. An endeavour is being made to arrange interesting curtain-raisers for all the rep.-matches. GENERAL. A fair number of South Otago residents travelled to Invercargill yesterday to see the Otago-Southland Rugby game, while to-day a number visited the Southland capital to view the pipe bands’ display. The Balclutha Pipe 1 Band all) made the trip to take part in the display. WOMEN’S HOCKEY, >—Northern Southland Defeats South Otago.— The representative fixture between Northern Southland and South Otago was played at Alilton on Saturday and resulted in a win for the visitors by 2 goals to 1 goal, after a fast game played on a heavy ground. The winners were , superior to South Otago, and it was only fine defence by tho latter’s full-backs and goalie that kept the score down. Play was always of a high standard and proceeded at a ‘fast pace right till the final whistle. For Southland F. and S. Sanson, H. M‘Kin--11 el, and F. AFDonald w-ere prominent, while V. Blaikie, J. Wethey, Z. and J. Morris played well for South Otago. Even play followed the neither side gaining any advantage. South Otago attacked first and Northern conceded a corner, from which AI. Murdoch made no mistake. S.O. 1, Northern nil. Northern immediately attacked and forced a corner, and C. Reidy scored with a good shot, thus evening up the scores —1-1. Northern gained another corner, and S.O. cleared to attack. Fine saving by F. Sanson was keeping S.O. from getting dangerous. Northern broke away, but were penalised for offside, and S.O. dared. Both sides were passing well and the defence was sound. Northern were having slightly the best of the play, and a strong run by G. Jones had S.O. in danger, V. Blaikie saving well by coming out of goal. She failed to dear, however, and'J. Wright scored. 2-1. The score was unaltered at half-time.

S.O. attacked on resuming play and forced several corners, which were not successful. Northern then took charge and kept S.O. on defence for most of the spell. Several hard shots were saved by V. Bilaikie, and then E. Al'Donakl had Northern in danger with a fast run, the visitors saving. Northern returned to the .attack, but the defence held and S.O. cleared. D. Falrhairn broke, through, but her shot was stopped in the mud, S.'O/gaining a corner. Northern cleared and a shot went over the goal, and in'the last few minutes S.O. endeavoured to equalise. Northern were safe, however, and the game ended with the visitors on attack. Messrs P. Farrell and J. Purvis were the referees. Bruce A defeated Waitahuna in the final of the knock-out competition in the northern division. S.O. RUGBY UNION, At a meeting of the S.O. Rugby Union a letter was received from Mr A. Greenall, hon. secretary, South Otago Young Farmers’ Clubs, asking permission to play a seven-a-side tournament between members of five Young Farmers’ Clubs at Balclutha on September 4, as a curtain-raiser to the representative match, Easten Districts.' —lt was decided to arrange tho tournament if possible. Permission was -given High School team to play Southland High School at Balclutha on AVednosday of this week and to Clutha to play Union at Dunedin on August 21. It was decided to again write to the Otago Union asking that a match be arranged for a S.O. third grade rep. team and an Ojiagb fourth grade team at Carisbrook at 12 noon. It was also decided to write Pirates Club relative to a match with their second fifteen and a S.O. junior team as a curtain-raiser to the Otago-South Otago game at Balclutha on August2B. Alesgrs Lyall, Al'Noe, and Hislop were appointed selectors for the junior team.
