JOTTINGS

Trench Fight’s winding-up gallops for tho Winter Cup were so brilliant that he has retained his position as first favourite for to-morrow’s yace.

During the past few days there has been a move made to back Brigadoro in the Grand National Steeplechase. He has had no racing experience over tho country, but his trainer in confident ho will jump it well.

Cock- o’ the North has made many friends for the National Steeplechase since his win at the Christchurch Hunt Meeting, and his trainer is very confident that he will run a good race.

Prior to R. Beale, riding Royal Limond in his cross-country races the Limond gelding raced very sourly for D. O’Connor, and many good judges think that a mistake has been made by the latter taking the ride instead of putting Beale up again. ,

There are some smart sprinters in the Paparua Handicap, six furlongs, to start at 12.7 to-morrow, including Pakanui, Bay Duke, Rebel Chief, Alma, and Araboa. Alma, Rebel Chief, and Bay Duke may bo selected favourites.

Clarion Call has impressed track watchers since his arrival at Riccarton by his excellent schooling, and his trainer is very confident regarding his chance in the Grand National Hurdles on Thursday.

The Jumpers’ Flat Race, mile and a-half. will start at 12.47. and its result should furnish a good line to the Grand National Hurdles on Thursday. The favourites to-morrow are likely to be Clarion pall, Collision, and John Charles.

Bitter Sweet was unlucky in the running of the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday, and this mare looks sure to win a race before this meeting is finished. She was only beaten a neck after being checked twice in the final three furlongs.

The Cashmere Plate, six furlongs, will start at 1.32, and has drawn a big

TROTTING. August 11, 13. —N.Z.. Metropolitan T.C August 28.—Auckland T.C. September 4.—New Brighton T.C. September 11.—Wellington T.C. October 2.— Methven T.C. October 9.—New Brighton T.C. October 16.—Waikato T.C. October 16, 18.—Westport T.C. October 23, 25.— Auckland T.C. October 23, 25.—Greyraouth T.C. October 25.—Oamaru T.C. October 30.—Wellington T.C. October 30.—Invercargill T.C. October 30.—'Thames T.C.

Held of 25. llockingham, after his good win at the Christchurch Hunt Meeting, is sure to be strongly fancied. Stromboli and Aggregate may be his most dangerous opponents. Mr R. A. Ferguson, who'was badly injured while attempting to stop Grand Mogul after the latter had dislodged his driver in the International Handicap on Saturdaiy afternoon, was well known as huntsman to the Brackenlield Hounds.

Frequent showers during the past week or 10 days have kept the course at Riccarton on the soft side, and there will be no fast times recorded to-mor-row afternoon. It is considered that the nature of the going will suit the chances of (Burglar and Nocturnus in the big steeplechase.

The Enfield Steeplechase, about two miles, will start at 2.57, and in the small field Kelly the Crow is likely to be sent out at a short price, unless Shillelagh Wood is reserved for this race. At a difference of 131 bin his favour Kelly the Crow should heat Shillelagh Wood. To-morrow’s racing at Riccarton will conclude with the Avonhead Handicap, which starts at 4.27. A field of 32 is engaged, and the luck of the draw will influence the chances, and if luck ■favours them in this respect Palmyra, Rebel Mate, and Sir Hugh should be the public fancies.

The Trial Hurdles will be the first race at Riccarton to-morrow, and is timed to start at 11.32, and will be run over a mile and three-quarters. Redolent’s track form has been so good lately that ho is likely to bo sent out favourite. His most dangerous opponents may be Last Link and Sunny Comet.

It is not often two such well-known Dunedin owners as Messrs G. J. Barton 'and J. Richardson get such goad prices as they did on Saturday. Great Admiral, winner of the Introductory Handicap, and Iraq, who finished second in rthe Selwyn Handicap, each returned large dividends. The latter raced in the nomination of his trainer. Brackets on the totalisator to-mor-row will he Golden Lap and Corowa in the Trial Hurdles; Solpit and Stromboli in the Cashmere Plato; and Col-

fence (ditch 3ft 9in), 4ft IQin; second fence, 4ft 6iu. 9. Sod wall (ditch 3ft 3iu), 3ft Sin. 10. Top of straight brush, 4ft lOin. 11. Carriage paddock brush, 4ft sin. SECOND ROUND. 12 and 13. Stand brush double, 4ft 6in, 14. Cutts’ brush, sft.

The Winter Cup will start at 3.42, and, as usual, this big mile handicap lias drawn a, big Held. The race boars a very open appearance, with smart inilers like Coucertpiitch, Trench Fight, Polity, Silver Streak, Dictate, Shy, Sovereign Lady, and Epris. The picks of the handicap are Epris and Silver Streak, but recent form points to Dictate, who is likely to start favourite, with strong support for Trench Fight and Ponty.

An interesting morning's work at Riccartou on Saturday was brought to a, close with a good exhibition of schooling once round over the steeplechase fences by Irish Comet and Brigador, neither of whom had jumped any of the fences before. They started at_ Cutts’s and completed a full round in good style. Irish Comet looks well, hut is very small, and the long journey and 21 fences may trouble him, but there is no doubt regarding his cleverness as a fencer. Brigadore appeared to outjump Irish Comet at several or the fences, and is a much better horse than when ho was at Riccarton a year ago,

The following are the ‘ Star-Sun’s selections for to-morrow’s races at Riccarton: —Trial Hurdles : Redolent, Sunny Comet, Last Link. Paparua Handicap: Rebel Chief, Greek Gold, Bay Duke.
