ARBOR DAY

CEREMONIES ON WEDNESDAY 1 TREE PLANTING AT ALL SCHOOLS Arbor Day is to be observed on Wednesday by the primary and secondary schools in Dunedin, as also throughout New Zealand. Brief addresses are to be given at all schools, and trees are to be planted l by the scholars. In his request tjiat the Dunedin City Council should arrange for the celebration of Arbor Day, the Minister of Internal Affairs has stated that, in addition to . the I'yaluable assistance given by a planting’ceremony in impressing the value of tree-planting from both aesthetic and economic viewpoints, it is felt that this day presents an opportunity for stressing various other matters of the greatest importance. Amongst these ho mentions the need of proper provision for after.care of trees once they hre planted, a matter which seems to have been overlooked in some cases, and conservation of the remaining forests (both protective and timbersupplying) as being an urgent necessity. The careless lighting of tires and the throwing of cigarette butts and matches from passing motor cars yearly result in the efforts of planting and beautifying in other areas being, countered by devastation wrought by these means. The council’s Reserve Committee, with the assistance of the Head Masters’. Association, Education Board, and Amenities Society, has made arrangements for the celebration of Arbor Day on the lines of the functions held last year. After the addresses as many scholars as - possible will proceed to the planting site and carry out planting under the supervision of the. reserves department, which has arranged for the holes to be dug and tools to bo supplied. ; The ■ participating schools, the lecturers, and the varieties of trees to be planted are as follow: North-east Valley.—Mr H.
