BRITAIN’S BARONETCIES
NINE OF HOST MtATWN The official Roll of tie Baronets for 193?, just issued by the Standing; Council of the Baronetage, shows that of the original baronetcies created by James I. on May 22, 1611, no fewer than nine were extant on February 26 this year. Of those created on Juno 29, 1611, there were at the same date 11 in existence, though in the case of one of these the holder of the title died in 1936, and no person had proved his succession to the baronetcy (says the London ‘ Daily Telegraph ’). "While 10 baronetcies are believed to hare become extinct in the past year, two of them dating back to the seventeenth century and one being a creation of less than two years ago, there are 25 oases in which the holder has died and no person has proved his succession. Of these 11 relate to baronetcies created between 1611 and 1688, the last holders of which have died in the past few years, five since January 1 last. In all there are 21 baronetcies of 1611 still surviving, for in addition to these of May and June there is one of November, 1611. The roll shows that there are 1,566 baronets, up to and including a creation of March 5, 1937, whose names appear according to the date of patent, and are also given in an alphabetical list. The loiters “ E,” “ S,” “ I,” “ G. 8..” and “ U.K.” denote whether the baronetcy is of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain, or the United Kingdom. The premier baronet of England is Sir Hickman Bacon, eleventh baronet of Redgrave, whose ancestor was the first to receive the honour on May 22, 1611, and who is also twelfth baronet of Mildexihftll, greatgd in 1627<
