BOY SCOUTS’ ASSOCIATION
The fifth annual hobbies and handicraft exhibition staged by the Dunedin Boy Scouts’ Association will this year be held in the Pioneer Hall on Friday and Saturday. August 13 and 14. The exhibition will be officially opened by the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) on Friday evening, at 8, the chair being taken by Sir Percy Sargood, president of the association and also a member of the Dominion Council. This exhibition is now recognised as being one of the major events in Scouting, as it gives the public an opportunity of seeing what Scouts are able to do with their leisure time as a result of the training and encouragement they receive from their officers. The work to be- submitted .this year is of an everincreasing standard, and the number of individual items to be exhibited is over 1,100, representing work done by Scouts (age 11 to 18) and the junior branch of Scouting, Wolf Cubs (age eight to 11). Tho exhibits cover a wonderfully wide range of handicraft work, including aeroplanes, artist work, camp equipment, basketwork, carpentry, meccano models, leatherwork, wireless work, engineering and other setions. Scouts from Owaka, Alexandra, and Lawrence will bo submitting entries besides all the local troops. In addition loan exhibits are being shown by tho Otago Model Engineering Society, the Repertory Society, and private individuals. Mr J. L. Passmore, member of the Dominion Council of the Boy Scouts’ Association, has donated a cup for tho troop gaining the highest points in the exhibition. This gift is highly appreciated, as it will give_ an incentive to al) Scouts to put their very best work into whatever exhibits they are working on. An original and Scouty entertainment by_ Scouts, Cubs, Rovers, and Sea Scoutsis to be given at intervals on both Friday and Saturday. Refreshments will be supplied by ladies of the group committees at a moderate charge. A representative group of about 60 Scouts and officers from Invercargill will come to Dunedin to see the exhibition, and will hold a conference with the local officers.
