'LIBEL'
REPERTORY SOCIETY SUCCESS The work of members of the Dunedin Repertory Society in ‘ Libel,’ a drama of an unusual type, is deserving of high praise. The play is one with tense and poignant drama, and splendid treatment is given to it by members of the cast. Again last night at His Majesty’s Theatre, on the occasion of its third presentation, it was witnessed by a large attendance, and held the rapt attention of those present throughout its three acts. The centrol role of Sir Mark Lodden is taken by Mr F. S. Avent, who gives a clever and artistic performance of a difficult part. Miss Anita Winkel gives a convincing picture of the wife of the man who has been so cruelly libelled. High honours also go to Mr Richard White and Mr A. M‘Dowell as the principal counsel for the respective parties to the suit, while M|r S. G. Lock is admirably cast_ as the judge. Good character studies are offered by_ Mr E. Griffon as an unsavoury witness who proved to be a blackmailer, and by Mr L. Jack as an excitable foreign doctor. The other members of the cast give fine support, and the play is admirably produced under the capable guiding hand of Miss Bessie Thomson, the court atmosphere being well maintained from curtain to curtain. ‘ Libel ’ will be staged for the last time to-night.
