ATTEMPTED EXTORTION

(Received August C, at 1 p.m.) A Federal operative arrested Wilbur Rothar, a janitor living with his wife and eight children, on a charge of attempted extortion from Mr Putnam. Rothar last month, while viewing Miss Earhart land in the local airfield, picked up the aviatrix’s scarf which was blown off by the wind. Rothar used the scarf in an effort to convince Mr Putnam that his wife was still alive, having been rescued by an armsrunning ship from an island near New Guinea, and demanded 2,000d0l for her safe return.
