SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK
WORK PROGRESSING STEADILY LINE BEGINNING TO TAKE SHAPE [Per U.iited Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 6. Entering on the second year of activity since its resumption, by the present Government work on the construction of the South Island Main Trunk railway northwards from Parnassus has reached a stage at which progress is becoming more pronounced; and within two months the line itself will begin to take shape. It is expected that the spanning of the Leader River with a steel and concrete bridge will be completed about the end of September, and at that time it is intended to commence laying the plates for the first section of the extension. Material for 15 miles of permanent way has arrived at Parnassus, and it is considered likely that in a little more than 12 months the lino will be opened as far north as Hundalee for the transport of all forms of traffic. The railhead will then be within 22 miles of Kaikoura.
