It was also decided to write the Director of Education relative to supplying a projecting plant for the school. CLUTHA SCOTTISH SOCIETY. Mr J. Stewart presided, and apologised for the absence of the president, Mr A. B. Stewart. The affirmative was taken by members of the. Young Farmers’ Club (Messrs R. Bransgrove, leader, R. Cullen, and M. Cousins), while the negative was taken by Misses I. Lockhart, S. Allison, and E. Harvey. Considering it was the first debate held, the speakers did remarkably well. The young men put forth several arguments why women should assist with farm work, but they were completely outclassed by the young women, who contended that their place was in the home, and if they carried out their duties properly inside they had no time for outside work. In summing up in favour of the negative, the judge (Mr R. Culbert, Balclutha) congratulated the speakers on the excellent showing ,made, and gave some helpful hints for future debates. Mr A. Greenall, district secretary, was present, and also took part in the debate, as did the chairman. 1 At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the judge, after which those present indulged in games and competitions for an hour or so and then partook of an excellent supper. Votes of thanks, to the Homemakers’ and the Young Farmers were carried, and brought to a close a very enjoyable evening. SOUTH OTAGO TEACHERS.
