£40,000 WAGES SUBSIDY

FRUIT INDUSTRY’S PLEA PROGRESS PAYMENT DESIRED [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 5. The Government’s undertaking to assist fruitgrowers by making £40,000 available to subsidise wages and costs incurred in connection with saies on the local market was discussed at the conference of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation to-day. It was decided to suggest to the Government that a flat rate per case should be paid to growers, irrespective of the prices received, and that Hawke s Bay and other districts in a similar position, should be paid on half of last year’s production. The conference also adopted a. remit urging that progress payments should he made forthwith from the sum of £40,000 to enable growers to retain their staffs.
