The book-canvasser was on the doorstep. “ Have you a Charles Dickens in your home?” be asked politely. '“No!” snapped the woman. “Or a Robert Louis Stevenson?” 44 No!” 44 Or a Walter Scott?” continued the canvasser, hope dawning in his eyes. “ No. we ain’t.” said the woman sharply. “ And, what’s more, I don’t take in lodgers. Try next door; they do.”
