A converted try on the call of time gave the Canterbury representatives a win over Wairarapa by 13 points to 8. Hard and fast though it was, the game lacked colour until well on in the second ■spell, when, with the score 8 all, both sides gave all they had in a determined effort to decide the issue. Wairarapa had the better of the opening exchanges, but Pawson eventually turned the tide, and with their forwards securing plenty of the ball the Canterbury backs were well in the picture. The fortunes fluctuated for twothirds of the spell, when J. Walker put Wairarapa on the score board with a fine penalty goal. Then Canterbury scattered the home defence and 1 awson scored for Nolan to convert. After Wairarapa had been driven off J. awson fooled Roach to race across. AA lute missed with the kick. The play improved considerably on resumption, and Wairarapa’s efforts wore rewarded when Fred ran forced Ins way across for Grantham to com ert. With honours easy a stern battle ensued and a draw-seemed likely when, with five'minutes to go, Mortlock made an opening to send Milliken across, and White converted. Wairarapa made a final effort, to pull the game out of the fire, and though Walker missed a held goal by inches no-side sounded with the scores unchanged. SECONDARY SCHOOLS WAITAKI BEATS CHRISTCHURCH : Playing the type of Rugby that always appeals, Waitaki overwhelmed Christchurch High School at the Oamaru Showgrounds yesterday to the tune of 17 points to 6. Waitaki was on top throughout,, particularly in the second spell, when' Christchurch was called upon to defend desperately at times. Had the Waitaki inside backs let the ball out to the wings the score might have been much greater, as times without number Woodhouse (halt-back) .feci his backs, only to have thh inside men tackled in possession. , As,a result the three-quarters were virtually strmed. Tho home team’s forwards rucked and worked splendidly, giving the half-back a goodly share of the ball. scrummaging was a feature to watch. Waitaki secured possession from the set scrums with monotonous regularity, the ball coming out cleanly and quickly. The Christchurch backs were a disjointed lot, little combination being shown, and when they did pass out the tendency was to run across the held. All things considered, the game lacked the vim so characteristic of these matches of former years, and generally the standard of play was not .comparable with the customary display of Waitaki teams. Christchurch was infinitely worse, and did not reveal an outstanding feature. Fountain (second five-eighth) was the pick of the backs, being resourceful and steady. Tins is the first occasion since 1929 that Waitaki has beaten Christchurch. The teams were as follow: — Waitaki.—B. Robertson, J. Sutherland, R. Hudson, AV. Barsdell, 1. Tilbury J. Mee (captain). A. Woodhouse, W. ’Turnbull, B. Hay, R. Here. M. Andrew, A. Miller, T. Neave, A. Pearson. and J. Murcott. Christchurch.—G. Pyke, P. Evans, I. Bluett, L. Chapman, W. Ullrick, MFountain (captain), H. Soal, A. Pope, J. Herron, D. Jane, D. Trolove, T. Dick. R. Fleming, E. Thomson, and J. Kinghorn. THE PLAY. AVaitaki kicked off against a strong sun, and play centred in Christchurch’s territory. Waitaki attacked, tho backs making short thrusts to advantage. Mee cross-kicked, and Christchurch forced, thus relieving the position. Tilbury gained 25yds with a lengthy kick. Christchurch again forced. After a brief lapse, during which Christchurch pressed hard, Waitaki forced the pace, tho visitors being hemmed on their own line. Mee and Sutherland made" repeated thrusts to no avail. Mee, however, was at last successful when ho picked up from a loose ruck and forced his way over._ Tilbury missed with the kick. Waitaki 3, Christchurch nil. Tho visiting backs now attempted to make up the leeway, but the defence held. The venue of play changed, and Tilbury missed a penalty goal from wide out. Hudson made a break, being pulled down inches from the lino. Taking advantage of the position, .Waitaki went to the attack for Sutherland to cross. Tilbury failed to convert. Waitaki 6. Christchurch nil. The Christchurch backs came to light with a pretty piece of passing, but Chapman’s pass went astray, and a certain try was lost. However, the backs again passed out for Bluett to “ dummy ” the full-back and score. Fountain missed. AVaitaki 0. Christchurch 3. AA’oodbouso secured from a serum and sent out, the ball going to Sutherland, who outpaced the opposition to score in the corner. Tilbury again missed. AA’aitaki 9, Christchurch 3. Half-time sounded without addition to tho scores. Christchurch being on the attack AAhiitaki 9. Christchurch 3. Tho second spoil opened with a smart nassing- rush by Christchurch, which, however, made little headway against determined tackling. Seal gained territory with an accurate kick to touch.. The Christchurch backs were shaping better at this stage of the fame. Fountain being conspicuous. Barsdell sent out and Mee cross-kicked for Sutherland to get away. AVaitaki kept up the attack, Dice tackling Pike in jiosscssion ou the line. A good deal of scrummaging ensued, but AVaitaki was unable to drive home the advantage, and a forcedown resulted. Robertson again put AVaitaki in a good position as a result of good following up. From a melee near tho lino AA r oodhouse went over in great

stylo. Tilbury converted. Waitaki 14. Christchurch 3. Led by Andrew and Pearson. Waitaki again attacked, but an infringement spoiled. Bluett saved brilliantly, outpacing the opposition to find touch near halfway. Not to be denied, however, tho Waitaki backs passed out, and a melee ensued on tho twenty-five line. Woodhouse sent to Mee, who gave Sutherland tho opening to score in the corner. Tilbury failed to convert. Waitaki 17, Christchurch 3. After a period of hard, rucking play, in which Waitaki had easily the better of tho exchanges, play returned, and an infringement a'lowed Fountain to kick a penalty goal. Waitaki 17, C’-'stchurch G Play returned, ami Mce and Tilbury were prominent, until the latter was tank'd in possession. We'ta'-i was still attacking when the final whistle sounded, with the scores:— Waitaki 17 Christchurch 6 ' Mr L. M'Callum was the referee. WAITAKI WINS JUNIOR GAME. In a curtain-raiser the Waitaki second fifteen defeated Christchurch by 12 points to 5.
