IN SIGHT OF PORT
SECOND OFFICER. DROWNED [Pek United Press Association.] TIMAEU, August 3. Tragedv marred the voyage of tho Port Waikato from Dunedin to Timaru to-day, when the second mate, R. V. Watts, lost his life when ho fell overboard. Watts, aged 31, was a married man, residing at Auckland. When the vessel was off Jacks Point, four miles from port, about 7 o’clock this morning, Watts and two members of tho crew were engaged in dumping refuse ovei'board. Tho refuse was placed in a sling and hoisted over the side, and, when the straw did not tip out, Watts climbed the rail and leaned over to cub tho ties, and he overbalanced. A lifebelt was thrown to him. The ship was put astern and a boat lowered. Watts did not get hold of the lifebelt, and he was Boating .when taken out of the water after being m the sea for 1-1 minutes. Artificial respiration was applied unsuccessfully.
