MOISEIWITSCH RECITALS

SECOND TO-MDRROW NIGHT A BRILLIANT PROGRAMME After the brilliant recital presented on Monday evening, the second concert of Mr Benno Moiseiwitsch, which is to he held to-morrow evening, ;be awaited with enthusiastic anticipation, for Mr Moiseiwitsch, an artist of .brilliant and exceptional gifts, is at the peak of his powers, and absolutely captivated the audience at his first concert. A most interesting programme has been arranged for the_ second recital, and will include Chopin’s ‘ Sonata Op. 35, B Flat Minorone of the greatest works in pianoforte literature. * Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue (Bach), ‘ Soring Night ’ (SchumannLiszt). ‘Hark! Hark! the Lark’ (Schubert - Liszt), ‘ Liebestraum (Liszt), ‘ Tanuhauser Overture’ (Wag-ner-Liszt), ‘ Isolde’s Love Dream’ (Wagner-Liszt), and Schumann’s ‘ Carnival Op. 9.’ This last, a genial composition, has the sub-title ‘ Little Scenes Composed on Four Notes.’ This title. is puzzling to those who are unfamiliar with the German names for the notes of the scale. In Germany the notes a, e flat, c, and h are respectively a, es, c, and h, which together spell Aesch, the name of a little town where one of Schumann’s friends lived. Schumann took these four notes, and using them as a theme wrote a number of short pieces, depicting the various characters in the carnival, as well as some of his personal friends. There is. for example. Pierrot an- 1 Harlenuin. Chopin, Paganini (the violinist of day), Chiarina (the Italian diminutive of Clara, his wife's name), Pantalon, and Columbine, and a number of others. The final scene is the ‘ March of David’s Guild Against the Philistines.’ In German university and rnuiscal slang the term “ Philistine ” corresponds somewhat to that of “ low-brow,” and Schumann has established an imaginary society called “ David’s Guild ” for the purpose of combating Philistinism in music. In this final scene of the carnival the Philistines are represented by the ‘ Grandfather Dance,’ a delightful tune which was a popular son-- inGermauy in former times, and the David’s Guild rout tho Philistines by hacking this ‘ Grandfather Dance ’ to pieces in the most amusing manner. ‘ The Carnival ’ is one of Schumann’s most popular compositions, and is so sparkling and full of vitality that the “ Philistines ” of the present day, even though Schumann does try to cut them to pieces, will no doubt enioy it Just as much as the David’s Guild cnioyed it. Box plans are at the D.T.C. for to-morrow night’s refcital. Day sales from 9 o’clock are also at the D.1.C.. where arrangements for students’ parties may ho made.
