SOOTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Our Balclutha Correspondent.] HIGH SCHOOL BOARD. The annual meeting of the South Otago High School Board was held on Mo.iday night, when Mr E. B. Lothian presided and extended a welcome to the new members Mesdames R. D. Willocks and A. E. Russell. Before vacating the chair, Mr Lothian expressed thanks to members for the support accorded him' during his terra as chairman. Nominations were then called for the position for the ensuing year, and Mr Lothian was unanimously re-elected. In view of the approaching departure of Miss K. M'Leod, it was decided to call for applications for the position of a part-time commercial teacher at a salary of £l2O per annum, and also for the position of board secretary, the positions to be separate. The Education Department wrote confirming the appointment of Mr A. R. Drearer to the B position on the staff. It was left to tba rector (Mr J. G. Anderson) to arrange for the appointment of a C grade teadier till the end of the present year. Mr Anderson, who returned at the end of the week from a brief visit to Australia, gave a short talk on conditions and the work done in schools which he had visited, and said that New Zealand compared favourably with those of Australia. MANCHESTER UNITY. The half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Princess- Elizabeth Lodge, held last night, was presided over by N.G. Sister M. Tosh, there being a good attendance of members and visitors from Loyal Dalton Lodge. The latter carried out the installation of officers as follows: G. Sister M.'Tosh; N.G., Sister I. Allison; V.G., Sister D. Fairbairn; E S Sister E. Wilson; warden. Sister E. Keach; guardian, Sister E. Walke*. (living to the resignations of the Per. Sec., Sister G. M. Culbert, and treasurer (Bro. R. Culbert), it was necessary to elect officers to fill the vacancies, and Sister Jean Murdoch and Bro. H. H. Lyall were appointed to the respective positions. Reference was made to P.G. Sister Culbert’s work as Per. Sec., and it was decided to place on record a minute of appreciation of her services. P.G. Bro. Culbert presented P.G. .emblematical certificates to the following: —Sisters N. M'Farlane, M. Halum, M. Tosh, and G. Culbert, and congratulated the lodge on having such efficient officers. N.G. Bro. F. Hallum responded to the second sentiment, while N. Sister Allison reported on a visit to Blenheim Lodge. DRAMA FESTIVAL. The drama festival under the auspices of South Otago drama clubs was held in the Britannia Theatre, Balclutha, on Monday and Tuesday nights. Seven clubs took part and 12 plays were presented, six on each night. The plays were of a varied nature, comedy and drama being about evenly divided. The staging and costuming were very appropriate, while the acting was of a fairly high standard. Mr A. Boyd made an efficient stage manager.
