ITALIANS IN ABYSSINIA
DIFFICULTIES DF PACIFICATION NATIVES REFUSE TO TRADE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, June 29. The ‘ Daily Herald,’ in a long special article, claims to reveal the difficulties which are thwarting Genera! Graziani’s attempts to pacify Abyssinia. The outer Italian military posts, the article says, arc virtually beleaguered, and food and munitions have to be d ropped from aeroplanes. The natives refuse to trade with the Italians or sell produce to them, despite the raising of the value of the local currency. One thousand better-class Abyssinian women have been exiled for plotting against General Graziani, who, over Signor Mussolini’s signature, is sending out a letter to leading Abyssinians emphasising that Italy is opening her arms to them as a mother to her children, and appealing to them to accept Italian goodwill and the benefits of civilisation. ' The letter points out that honourable surrender is a real act of heroism.
