KING’S BIRTHDAY

FIVE AUSTRALIAN DATES An extraordinary situation has arisen through the lack of willingness of the Australian Government to co-operate on the observance of a uniform date for the celebration of the King’s Birthday in Australia, says the Sydney ‘ Herald.’ Because the actual date of the birthday is in the middle of the Christmas shopping period, it was agreed to observe the holiday on another date. At the Loan Council meeting last month the delegates undertook to recommend the adoption of a uniform date. The Federal Ministry was informed that five different dates had been fixed in various States. New South Wales and South Australia will observe the holiday on May 12, Victoria on, June 14, Queensland on January 3, Western Australia some time in September or October, and Tasmania on June 7. The Cabinet has decided to adopt the Victorian date, June 14, as that for the holiday in Federal Territories because it agrees most closely with the date selected in Britain. Federal officers in other States will be given a holiday on the day chosen by that State. Vice-regal levees will be held on Juno 9, to coincide with the date of the British observance. The Federal Ministry intends to make another appeal to the States for co-operation to select a uniform date for next year’s observance.
