NEW £lo,ooo STRUCTURE

PREMISES ERR MILSURH LIME CO.

A new two-story building, with frontages to Crawford and Bond streets, is to ho erected for the Milburn Lime and Cement Co. Ltd., the contract for the work having been signed by Mr W. H. Naylor last week

on a tender price of £10,635. The contract, which does not include the cost of heating installation, expires next January. Demolition of the single-story building, formerly' occupied by Bates and Co, as a produce market, is proceeding in order to prepare the site for the new structure, which will have a floating foundation erected on a concrete base because a solid foundation does not exist there above 18ft. This fine site will provide two floors in the building measuring 93ft x 80ft, although only

about half, of the floor space will be used by the Milburn Company. The ground floor is to be divided into two sections—one for storage and the other for Jetting purposes. In the section to be occupied by the company provision has been made for through traffic from Crawford street to Bond street. Administrative offices for the company will occupy almost half of the upper floor, the remaining space being divided into three suites of offices for letting. Structural steel and reinforced concrete will be combined to ensure the

erection of a solid building, corrugated asbestos cement being specified for the roof.

The Crawford street frontage of the building is to be plastered in cream, provision being made for the company’s name to be set back into the plaster and surrounded by' an ornamental frieze. Steel window frames are to be used, while, as mentioned elsewhere on this page, glass bricks are to form a central feature above the main entrance to the building. The architects for the work are Messrs Salmond and Salmond.
