NOTES ON THE EVENTS [By St. Cuair.] The Ashburton Winter Meeting was held in fine but very cold weather, and recent rains had left the course slightly dead. Cottingham (488 and 257) was backed down to very short prices on both machines in the Hinds Hurdles, with Silver Sight (109 and 131), Fireguard (57 and 135), Sunny Comet (53 and 144), and Royal Amphora (33 and 74) the next fancied. Royal Amphora and The Grasper quickly assumed charge, and were well clear at the first hurdle, where Fireguard Ipst ground. At the second hurdle this pair were eight lengths in front of Cottingham and Silver Sight, but Royal Amphora made a bad jump. Racing along the back The Grasper showed the Way to Cottingham and Silver Sight, but at the far turn tho_ favourite took charge and was first into the straight from The Grasper and Silver Sight. After leading over the last fence, Cottingham hung out badly, and Turner had to use the whip on the off-side of the head_ to keep him on the course. Silver Sight put in a good run, but just failed by half a length to reach Cottingham. The Grasper was four lengths away third, with a big gap to Trumpet Blast, Royal Amphora, Pahu, and Fireguard. ° * * * * The scratching of Combat and Yolo Dale from the Maiden Stakes saved the necessity of running the race in divisions, and Cocksure (319 and 207), Happy Knight (198 and 295), Aggravate (182 and 209), Short Circuit (168 and 192), and Prince Flaneur (122 and 236) wore the best backed. From a very straggling start, Prince Flaneur and Aggravate were first to show out, but after rounding the far turn Prince Flaneur had drawn three lengths clear, and was followed by Cocksure, Elmarch, and _ Banker’s Choice racing together, with Happy Knight and Locket next. Prince Flavour was still well clear turning for home, where Happy Knight, Banker’s Choice, Locket, and Elmarch were racing next, and in a close order Prince Flaneur was a length clear of Locket at the distance, but the latter finished better and beat Prince Flaneur by a length and a-half. Short Circuit (who was one of the last to leave the barrier) was two lengths away third, and Happy Knight and Pal Roger were next.

Royal Pat, Cora Derby, Jacaranda, and Chieftainess were withdrawn from the Lyndhurst Trot, for which Santa Fe (242-333), Credit Balance (186-204), Attain (138-173), Scottish Maid (137147), and Colonel Axworthy (131-120) were the best backed. Santa Fe led Bridget Brough and Reymero through the straight, hut at the end of half a mile Chase ran to tho front and led along the back from Credit Balance, Policy, and Santa Fe. Rounding for the turn, Santa Fe ran up into second place to Chase, and was followed across tho top by Credit Balance, Bridget Brough, and Janet Gaynor. Chase led Santa Fe. Credit Balance, and Bridget Brough into the straight, but at the distance was being hard driven, and Santa Fe beat him a length and a-half. Attain was one length away third, followed by Donor.

Dictate. Hanlon, Forum, and Potent were withdrawn from the Mayfield Hack Handicap. Salient Knight (54.7-492), Cape Gabo (382-378), Maroha (105-173) were the best backed. Grampion led Royal Ransom, Gold Boy, and Cape Gabo to the back of the course; then Gold Boy took charge, and with Royal Ransom racing at his girth led Salient Knight and Grampion, also racing together, along the back and round for

the turn. Gold Roy was first into the straight from Royal Ransom and Salient Knight, with Capo Gabo last. At the distance Salient Knight challenged Gold Roy, and a little later on Cape Gabo attempted to get through and Silver Slipper moved up on the outside. The latter got checked by getting on to the heels of one of the leaders, and Capo Gabo failed to get through. .Salient Knight beat Gold Roy half a length, with Cape Gabo a neck away third, a bead in front of Grampian, with Royal Ransom close up next. * * * * All started in the Dronioro Hack Steeplechase, for which tbo locallyowned Streamline (638 aud 257), Polydora (222 and 227), Hunting Go (174 and 183), Arctic Star (146 and 217), and Burglar (83 and 133) were best backed. Streamline at once went to the front, setting a very solid pace, which caused most of the field to come to grief. Streamline aud Acena were quickly out in front, followed by Spearmarch and Gay Boa. Elgindale and Sunny Lad ran off at the first fence, and crossing the stand double Streamline was three lengths in front of Acena and Arctic Star. With a mile _to go Spearmarch fell, aud going to the far turn Gay Boa ran up into second place. At the next fence Arctic Star fell, and Polydora over him. Five furlongs from homo Streamline was four lengths clear of Acena, Gay Boa, and Hunting Go. Then Gay Boa tipped out at the second last fence, and turning for home Hunting Go ran up to Streamline. The latter was first over the last fence, and won comfortably by two and a-half lengths from Hunting Go; Acena a dozen lengths off third; Burglar completing the course. * * * Only Palmyra was missing from the Moreton Hack Handicap, for which Miracle (712 and 495) Nolana (180 and 202), Waitara (152 and 177), Gay Lyric (137 and 176), and Sir Hugh (116 and 213) were the best backed. From an even break Potent and Gay Lyric began the smartest, and led Colombo, Rebel Mate. Waitaka, and Miracle round the far turn. Racing across the top Potent, with Gay Lyric on his girths, was three lengths clear, with Colombo and Miracle at the head of the others. Potent was a length clear of Gay Lyric turning tor home, and. once in the straight Miracle ran up into first place, with Nolana and Waitara next. In the run homo Potent maintained the advantage, end won bv a length and a-half Waitara, Roy Bun, Nolana, and Rebel Mate next. # .♦ * * All started in the Maronan Handicap, and Dictate (715-416) Swordstick (306-274), Queen Dorothy (275266), Greek Gdd ,155-188), and Epm (143-183) were the best backed. Metal Bird began the smartest and led Palmer and Greek Gold along the back. At the far turn Metal Bird was still leading, about two lengths from Queen Dorothy, PaHmer, and Tunneller. Metal Bird was still in charge at the home turn, and followed by Queen Dorothy, Tunneller, Swordstick, and Dictate. After passing the distance the favourite got an opening, and cutting down the leaders very smartly, beat Queen Dorothy by a length and a-half. Carfex was two lengths away third, a head in front of Swordstick, with Metal Bird next. * * * * Only Big Nelson f Llewellyn’s Pet,, and Bill B were missing from the big field in the Winehraore Trot, Wynan (525-452), Donor (236-324), Panquitch (195-226), Southern Chief (174-181), and Bill Grattan (165-238) were the best backed. Wynan broke badly in the first furlong, and Lord Axworthy, Karoro, Chieftainess, Donor, and Bill Gratton led through the straight. Going to the back Panqnitch ran up into third place, and followed Lord Axworthy and Karoro. At the far "turn Olive King joined Panqnitch, and they were followed by Bill Grattan, Lottie Guy, Wynan, and Dundee. At the distance Wynan ran through and looked all over ft winner, but Dundee finished very fast and beat him by a head. Southern Chief was three lengths away third, followed by Warpath, Lottie Guy, and Karoro, DANNEVIRKE H.C.
