SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[Feom Ouk Balclutha Correspondent.] June 27. HOCKEY. Stirling 5, Clutha 1. Owaka 1, Kaitangata 0 (game abandoned). By defeating Olutha on the Stirling ground on Saturday the Stirling women’s hookey team wins the southern division in the South Otago competition, and will now meet the winners of the northern division in the final. Stirling had the better of the game, the forwards proving too good for Clutha. D. Fairbairn (2), J. Duncan (2), and D. Renton scored for Stirling, and Jean Gold for Clutha. For the winners A. Duncan, L. Kirkness, and J. Duncan were prominent, while V. Wilson, and E. Reach showed up for Clutha, TheOwaka-Kaitangata game, played at Kaitangata, was abandoned after 10 minutes in the second spell, Owaka then leading by one goal to 0. Owaka attacked all the first spell, but good defence by the Kaitangata goalie kept down the score. Owaka pressed in, the second spell, but the ground at the town end was very bad, making play almost impossible, and the referee (Mr Purvis) brought it to a sudden conclusion,; K. Sheddan scored for Owaka. BASKETBALL. A Grade.—Union 27, Ex-High. 15; School defeated School B. B Grade.—-Clutha I. 12, Greenfield 10; Clutha 11. defaulted to School D. Saturday’s matches completed the first round of matches. In A grade Clinton lead with '8 points, the points of the other teams being: Stirling 6, School A 4, School B 2, Ex-High 0. In the B grade the points are:—Clutha I. 8, Greenfield 4, School C 4, Clutha 11, 2, School D 2. In the Clinton-Ex-High game play was fast, and a good display was given by both teams. Ex-High put up an excellent defence, and at half-time Clinton led by only two points (11-9). In the second spell, however, Clinton’s greater speed and team work gave it an opportunity to increase-.the lead, the score being very accurate. G. Jury, captain of the team, was outstanding both in field work and scoring ability, and she was well supported. It would be difficult to find any weakness in this team. Ex-High played well, and in the right competition would be a team to be reckoned with. E. _ Borthwick was a tower of strength in defence, while D. Lyall played a very good game at, centre. Mrs Lock'refereed.

The School A v. School B match was somewhat disappointing, the A _ team rather under-estimating the ability cif, their opponents. Mrs' Drearer and Mias, Kidd were the referees. ■ In th<i B grade match’ Clutha 1. V.' Greenfield, there was a general improvement in the play, and Clutha by victory maintains its lead in the section. Both' teams would do well to concentrate on combination. Miss Ballard was referee. Clutha 11. could not raise a team to meet School D and had to default, those present indulging in a friendly game. —Committee Meeting.— A meeting of the committee was held at the conclusion of play, Mrs A. R. Dreaver presiding. Those present were Mrs E. Lothian, Misses Ballard, Cuthbertson, Borthwick, Stone; and Mrs A. E. Lock (secretary). The business dealt with was chiefly in regard to the control of the country cup, the Otago Association having circularised the subassociation regarding this matter. The association decided that it was its opinion that challenges for the cup should be played on the holders’ courts. Arrangements for referees were made, and the management of games generally was also discussed. FARMERS’ UNION. Mr A. Maxwell presided over the monthly meeting of the Clutha branch of the Farmers’ Union, held last night. Several apologies for non-attendance were received. Mr A. C. Cameron, president of the Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs, notified that a young farmers’ educational week would, be held in Dunedin from August 9 to 13, also' a special agricultural course for members of young farmers’ clubs at Lincoln College from July 19 to 23. The quota from South Otago and Central Otago would be 30. It was stated that the branch could appoint one young farmer, the W.D. one, and the Young Farmers’ Club one. It was left to the president and the acting secretary to nominate a suitable candidate. The secretary of the New Zealand Pig Marketing Association, 'Hamilton, wrote stressing the necessity for a stricter system of grading pigs to develop the export trade, also advocating a levy on all pigs slaughtered. It was stated that- the levy was already in force, and the letter was “ received.” In the course of a discussion on matters dealt with at the recent provincial conference, Mr A. Renton and others expressed regret that the principle of some form of compulsory membership of the union had not been approved. GENERAL. About 70 horses were forward at the sale held in Balclutha on Friday, there being a large attendance of the public. There was a good demand for young farm horses. Top price was £47 10s, secured for a five-year-old gelding offered on behalf of a Milton client. A three-year-old gelding made £35, mares to £36 10s, spring carters to £34, and other sorts from £lO up.
