GRAVE DISSERVICE

AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT LOAN REJECTED [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 26. The statement that Wellington had made a great mistake in rejecting the Rongotai aerodrome development loan proposal and that those who had worked actively for its defeat had .clone a grave disservice to the cause of aviation in New Zealand was made by the Minister of (Mr Semple), speaking at the christening ceremony of the new Union Airways air liner Kotare. Mr Semple said that Wellington must have an airport adequate to all future needs, and in recognition of that fact the Government had offered the City Council a subsidy of £70,000 towards the improvement of Rongotai. The people of Wellington, however, had turned down the Government’s offer. “ I am exceedingly sorry that they did so,” the Minister said, “ for they did not understand the requirements of the future, while those who actively worked for the defeat of the proposal did a grave disservice to their city and to the cause of aviation in New Zealand.”
