WIftfrBLEDDN TOURNAMENT VON GRAMM DEFEATS MAKO DRUGNON AND STEDMAN BEATEN IN DOUBLES Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, June 26. At Wimbledon a crowded No. 1 court saw tho French and New Zealand combination (Brugnon and Stedman) in a stern chase against the agile South Africans, Farquharson and Kirby, who, combining better, had venomous services and always had a little to spare. The South Africans won the first set, 6-4, and ran into a 3-0 lead in the second, when they faltered, allowing the opposition to gain a 4-3 lead. After that all Stedman’s great retrieving could not atone for Brugnon’s overhitting and uncertainty. The South Africans’ services outclassed their opponents in tho third set. Von Cramm did not lose a set against Mako, It was a story of the American’s helplessness to cope with the German’s skimming backhand cross-court shots, while his own backhand was unstable. Applause for Crawford’s periodical phases of brilliance showed how the crowd was hungry for his best. Crawford, in the third set, had little to congratulate himself on. Trailing behind 1-3, he made atrocious mistakes for a player of his calibre, and the gallery’s own opinion was that he lacked someone to extend him. He levelled 3-3 with a love service, only to produce a crop of errors in handling Shaft's kickers. Austin’s ball control was too good for Le Croix, who was outplayed all round- tho court, although he ultimately saved four match points. The match lasted barely half an hour. The doubles match in which tho Czechoslovakians defeated the Americans was the best seen at Wimbledon for years. There was remarkable machine-gun volleying at the shortest range. Grant’s retrieving was amazing, although the Americans did not combine well and left wide gaps. Hecht played magnificent tennis. The last eight men to meet in the quarter-finals on Monday will play as follow; Austin v. Grant, Crawford v. von Cramm on- the centre court, Budge v. M'Grath, Henkel v.-Parker.
