ST. ANDREW SOCIETY

TRIBUTE TO SIR JAMES BARRIE A tribute was paid to the memory of the late Sir James Barrie at the monthly gathering of the St. Andrew Society of Otago, held in Wilson Hall on Saturday night, when the president (Mr James Jeffrey) said: “ As a mark of the esteem with which we hold Sir James near and dear to us, and as a tribute to the memory of the world’s most famous playwright of present days, I would ask all present to stand in silence for a minute with bowed heads. We, of the dramatic section, have suffered a great loss, but we shall not lose touch with him altogether, for his plays and his dramatic art will go down as history, and will live through the annals of time.” An excellent programme was arranged by Mr Walmsley’s party. Those who entertained were:—Mr Harper (‘Mary o’ Argyle’l, Miss M. Mercer (‘Hail, Caledonia’), Miss Elsie Kirkham (‘Cornin’ Thru’ the Rye’). Master Airdrie Stewart piped in the president, and the immediate past president, Mr Sabiston, secretary of the Orkney and Shetlands Club, received a cordial welcome. Mr J. Brown, convener of the literary section, invited all

interested to be present at the section’s meeting on Tuesday night. In this section were Misses Jardine and Paul, who are leaving shortly for the Old Country.
