“SHANDY” INTOXICATING

A COURT RULING [Pek United Phbss Association.! ASHBURTON, June 25. An unusual case- was the subject of a reserved decision delivered by Mr H. Morgan, S.M., to-day. Frank Roach, a barman, and Edward A. Rattray, representing a catering . firm,_ , were charged with supplying intoxicating liquor to a person under the age of 21. James Francis Cornwall, a farm worker, was charged with aiding the sion of the offence. Cornwall bought a glass of shandy at a booth at the racecourse, handing it to his son, aged 18, who was not seen hy the barman. The charges against Roach and Rattray wore dismissed, and Cornwall was fined £1 and costs (10s). During the hearing, tbe point was raised whether a shandy was an intoxicating beverage, the magistrate holding that whether it was a da,sh of beer in lemonade or a dash of lemonade in beer it was an intoxicating beverage.
