Line for service in the Montreal-New Zealand trade have been named Kaipara and Kaikoura. Alexander Stephen and Sons, Penthouse, and W'illiam Doxford and Sons, Sunderland, are the bunders, and the two vessels are expected to take up their running about the end of this year. .Single-screw motor ships_ of 5,900 tons gross, with a deadweight carrying capacity of about 9,000 tons, they will have a service speed of about 13J knots. The names Kaipara and Kaikoura aro not new ones in the New Zealand Shipping Company’s fleet. The first ships to carry these names were steel twin-screw, four-masted steamers, built in 1903 by John Brown angl Co. Ltd., Glasgow. In 1912, when leaving Auckland fully loaded for London, the Kaipara struck an uncharted rock in Rangitoto Channel and was badly holed. Her cargo included large quantities of frozen meat, butter, and cheese, and much of this was jetti-

soned to lighten the ship, and for weeks after drifted ashore on the beaches facing Rangitoto Channel. Shoals of sharks were also attracted to the scene, and considerably curtailed bathing for some months. Later the Kaipara rock was blasted to pieces. Two years later, when Homeward bound from New Zealand the Kaipara was sunk in August, 1914, by the German raider Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosso. A few weeks later the raider hersclt was caught coaling off the. West Alncan coast by the old British cruiser Highflyer and sunk. STRATHMORE CAPTAIN’S CAREER. The new P. and O. liner Strathmore, which is due to arrive in Melbourne on her maiden voyage early in November, has as her commander Captain R« Iv» Burge. He has had a most interesting career since he first went to sea m 1901. Captain Burgo joined the Carradale in Hamburg, and a few days later the ship deft in ballast under tow with a nucleus crew of “ runners ” for Norway. Very heavy weather was met, and two days out from Cuxhaven tho towing hawser parted, and the tug ran for shelter, leaving the ship for three days in a severe winter gale and a lee shore. She was only saved from disaster hy th,o brilliant seamanship and handling of her master, Captain Alexander Smith, of Banff,. Scotland. When the weather moderated the tug, after a long search, found the Carradale again, and with considerable difficulty towed her into Fredrickstad. Since 1901 Captain _ Burgo has served in many ships, including the s.s. Syria, Arabia, Nile, Kashgar, Khiva, and many others. In 1934 he was promoted to command tho C;irthage. Since then he has commanded the Kidderpore and the Cathay. INTERESTING TRAMP STEAMER^ Cut in Halves After Wreck. Crain freights have attracted scores of tramp steamers and motor ships to Australian ports, to load for Great Britain this season. Some of the ships have had interesting careers, and one of these is the British tramp steamer Grainton (6,341 tons), which has loaded a full cargo of wheat at GeeIon". The Grninton was built at Sunderland in 1929. Two years ago she was involved in a serious collision with another ship in the English Channel. With her back bent the Grainton was beached near Dover. Later she was towed off by Dutch tugs and taken to Amsterdam. She. was cut in halves and a new mid-section was fitted. The chief engineer (Mr Robson) and the chief steward (Mr Horner) are the only members of the_ ship s present crew who were serving aboard the Grainton at tho time of the collision. The chief officer (Mr W. M. Collie) has not visited Australia for 35 years. His last visit was in a small barque. The new Greek cargo steamer Athina Livanos, which left Geelong with a wheat cargo for Europe, went ashore in February in a fierce gale at Hartlepool (England). She was refloated several days later. PRESENTATION FROM PILOTS. An inscribed cigarette case from the harbour pilots of Melbourne has been presented to the retiring commodore of the Burns, Philp Line (Captain S. The old coastal steamer John, which has been lying at Clyde Quay (Wellington), for some time being dismantled, is shortly to make her last voyage. This time the trip will not be to any of the coastal ports in which she has pushed her blunt bows for many years past, but round to Evan’s Bay. where sho will be run ashore and broken up for scrap by local merchants, to whom she has been sold. The buyers are waiting for flue weather before they beach the old steamer. Several vessels have met their end in Evan’s Bay, among them the Dilpussund and the Tobias, both broken up near the powerhouse.
