AUCKLAND POST OFFICE

SEVEN-STORY BUILDING PLANNED [Pee United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, June 24. ■ A special steel-framed earthquake resisting building, seven stories high, is shortly to be erected by the Government on the site of the old post office in Shortland street. This building is to provide accommodation for the post office at present in temporary premises, and will also house a number of other State departments. Particulars of the proposed building have been furnished by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. B. Semple), who announced that tenders for the erection of the new block will shortly be called. The basement design, as shown in the drawings prepared by the Government architect, is a striking example of modern functional architecture, with strongly marked horizontal lines and a large glass area, affording ideal conditions for the occupants. The foundation will consist of a concrete raft. This has been rendered necessary by the fact that the site, is on reclaimed ground and is still within tidal range.
