BOXING AT OAMARU

mm BEATS EDDINGTON In his fourth professional bout. Stan Jeukin (Oamaru) 10.3), beat “ Tiger ” Eddington (Timaru) XO.O, on points lust night, in a bout which went the full distance. From a spectator’s viewpoint the fight was a good one, there being plenty of action, with an occasional hectic close-up exchange. In the opening rounds Jenkin showed to advantage, his reach and height having the Timaru boy worried at times. Adopting his usual style of lighting, Eddington opened with a rush and a hard attack, but it was noticeable that the local boxer had matters well in hand, and countered Eddington’s bull-liko onslaughts with straight lefts to the head and face. Occasionally it was seen that both boxers were somewhat inclined to hit low. This was due in a large measure to the greater height of Jenkin over the Timaru boy and to the crouching attitude adopted by the latter when taking the fight to his opponent. However, both soon brought their punches higher. The third and fourth rounds saw some good in-fighting, in which Eddington had perhaps the better of the exchanges. Continuing to adopt his rushing tactics, Eddington was making the fight at every opportunity; sometimes he scored with rights to the body, but more often he missed badly. The fifth round was definitely Jcnkin’s. Ho came out and inflicted severe punishment, chasing Eddington round the ring. Had ho followed up the advantage instead of stopping and allowing his opponent to clear and recover, the fight would probably have ended. Similarly in the sixth round Jenkin failed to make the most of his opportunities. A quiet eighth was followed by another attack by Eddington, who, however, was unable to effectively get under his opponent’s reach, although he landed several punishing body blows. Again taking the initiative Jenkin lashed Eddington with lefts and rights to the face and head, but the failure to follow up the advantage lost much that had been gained. The final round was a triumph for Jenkin, who, despite his opponent’s efforts to rush to the ropes, dealt out lefts with monotonous regularity. The end came with Jenkin well ahead on points. The decision was well received. Mr G. J. Sceats refereed the bout. PRELIMINARIES. B. Buckley (Dunedin) 7.12, beat A. Luxon (Oamaru) 8.5, on points. This was a lively bout, with the advantage being always with the winner. Luxon was game, but Buckley was the more experienced fighter of the two, and showed some clean hitting and clever footwork. i W. Jack (Timaru) 10.7, beat D. Wheeler (Dunedin) 10.1, on points. The opening rounds were quiet, with the Dunedin boy taking the fight to his opponent. He was inclined to push rather than punch. In the last round Jack came to light with a strong right to score heavily. Wheeler’s punches lacked sting' and were at times illtimed. L. Greaney (Dunedinl 9.0, .beat M. Hunter (Oamaru) 8.12, on points. This bout was a very willing one. Greaney showed a wider variety of punches, and his footwork was a feature to watch. In the last round he staged a really fine display, and had his opponent groggy. The best man obviously won. F. Smith (Timaru) 10.6, beat N. Jenkin (Oamaru) 9.7, on a technical kuock-out in the last round. In the opening rounds Jenkin scored with straigKl lefts, and at times made his opponent miss badly. Until the commencement of the last round _ the Oamaru hoy was well ahead on points, but Smith attacked hard and landed a savage blow on the jaw which staggered Jenkin. Smith followed up with another to the head, sending Jenkin to the mat. He rose to his feet at the count of six, but was obviously out, and after a short exchange of blows in which Smith again dealt severe punishment, the referee stopped tbe fight.
