LOGAN PARK GROUNDS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your issue of yesterday mention was made of the late application of the University organisations in reference to grounds at Logan Park. At the Citv Council meeting the Mayor said that “ for the second year in succession the University had neglected to apply for grounds on the Oval at Logan Park til the middle of the season, and thus freed themselves from the’charges.” Cr Begg also had something to say, and the position as outlined in your report is not very clear as to where the City Council stands in connection with these grounds. You, sir, will no doubt remember the circumstances of the filling in of Lake Logan, and after the Exhibition was concluded, what was done to this area. I know that a citizens’ committee raised approximately £15,000 for the purpose of making this area of Logan Park a recreation ground for the people of Dunedin. The University arranged to get part of the area by special deed under certain conditions from tho City Council, but not, I take it, on the understanding that if it made late application its fees for the season would be overlooked, and this is the only reasonable reading of the report of the Council’s meeting on Monday. . , It appears to the writer that the time has arrived when the position of these conditions should be gone into carefully by the council, so that the citizens will know just where they stand in connection with this ground and just how much the University controls a certain area. The assistance of your valuable paper in this respect, I am sure, will be appreciated by the sports bodies of Dunedin.—l am, etc., Sonel. June 23.
