COURSING.

TO THE EDITORSir, —I was very surprised to read a letter written by Mr A. L. Mitchell •in reference to coursing notes written by Plumpton ”on the last Dunedin meeting. I have been connected with the sport of coursing for a number of years- now,- and I always look forward to the notes written by “ Plumpton.” I attend most of the meetings in'the South Island and have read the -notes in connection with all these, and have yet to find fault with anything in “ Plumpton’s ” notes. I have recently returned from a holiday in the North Island, where 1 found the Sports Special’- widely read among the coursing fraternity, and in reference to the meetings there which are written up by “ Plumpton ” I found club members very pleased and enthusiastic. As a spectator at the Dunedin. Club’s last meeting, I take exception to the letter written by Mr Michell, who, by the way, was acting judge—firstly because the notes written were most accurate in every way; and, secondly, because the number of kills in respect to courses run was very high, and proved the hares on the day to bo not up to standard. As to comments by the public that the meeting was the best seen at Forbury Park for some time, I think this is rather a joke, as I do not think there were a dozen spectators in the grand stand all day. The meetings last year were simply a disgrace to the club and an insult to the public. My own opinion of The meeting was that the running of it, as far as officials were concerned, .could have been much better. The hares were _ only fair, the dogs (with four exceptions) only second class, and at least six of them not even that. The slipping was very poor, the judging equally as poor, the inclosure in a very bad state. I would advise Mr Mitchell to study his rule book before wasting time writing letters such as th® one about “Plumpton,” who, as his notes and comments indicate, does mor® _ for the good of coursing, not only in Dunedin, but throughout New Zealand, than anyone else connected with the sport. Though I have read with interest all his notes, I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting “ Plumpton.” but in closing I congratulate him on his writings and am only sorry we do not get more of them. —I am. etc.. Old Timek. ‘ && &
