TAIERI COMPETITIONS

A meeting of the Taieri Competitions Festival Committee was held on Saturday evening. Mr C. Roy Spademan signified his willingness to adjudicate for the musical sections, and Miss Ethel Todd will adjudicate in the stage dancing classes.

It was decided to insert another now class, piano duet, 18 years and over, the offer of the amount of the first prize from a friend in Green Island being accepted with thanks. The offer of Miss A. Kovaleski for medals for prizes for Highland fling (local) was accepted with thanks; also that of the Taieri Pipe Band for first prize medal for piping (novice class), and the Mosgiel Municipal Band for a medal for the brass section.

Special prizes as follows were received with appreciation;—Miss E. Lungloy, cash prizes for boys’ songs; Miss M. Randle, scholarship for elocution (amateur); and Mr C. R. Mazengarb, two trophies for elocution. Considerable discussion took place over the suggestion that the higher classes in piano playing should ba made “ test ” classes. This resulted in the opinion being expressed that it was rather late in the season to fix special test pieces, having regard to other musical events which piano pupils might be preparing for, and occuring about the same time as the local’competitions. It was decided to consider this matter early next season, for the 1938 festival, and also to include the vocal, elocution, and other classes at the same time.

The suggestion to include a separate class for a sacred vocal solo was declined, partly on account of the time involved, it being pointed out that a sacred solo could be given in the usual vocal solo classes.
