MR ARMSTRONG'S OPTIMISM PRAISE FOR FORTY-HOUR WEEK Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright GENEVA. June 21. “ If you vote against the 40-hour week of the textile industry you are hopeless,” said Mr H. T. Armstrong, the New Zealand delegate, during a debate at the Textile Convention at the International Labour Office. “When the hours'wore reduced to 40 a week in New Zealand,” Mr Armstrong continued, “ income increased by 20 per cent., amounting to_ £14,000,000 a year, and resulting in the demand for goods increasing enormously.” New Zealand was prosperous to-day, Mr Armstrong said, because of the increased spending power of the community. In addition, tens of thousands of hoys and girls leaving school were now absorbed in industry instead of walking the streets. “ The Conservatives would not dare repeal the 40-hour week,” Mr Armstrong declared.
