Christchurch won tho swimming, tJunedin the tennis and boxing, and the athletic meeting ended with honours all square, the day finishing. wR" D , edin having five points for the shield and Christchurch throe. , TRACK AND FIELD. ATHLETICS. Winning the. last event on. the programme,' tho inilo .medley relay, edin managed to break even with Christchurch’in tho. track aucV field athletic meeting, which was held before a largo crowd of spectators on the University Oval at Logan Dark, each college scoring 19 points. Conditions could not. have been much worse, the - track .being heavy and thoroughly soaked after recent rains, so that this, together with the fact that tho meeting was being held out of season, would account in part for tho mediocrity of some of the times returned. On the. other hand, there were some particularly good performances in tho field, events m which the outstanding performer was J. Lee, of Christchurch, - who collected four titles, all of .them with good performances. Considering the 1 greasy nature of tho run-up, his 20ft 2in in the long jump was a sound effort, while he also did a good triple leap" of. 41ft Bin to win the hop, step, and jump. Ho won tho 120yds hurdles under adverse conditions in 18 l-ssec, and after tieing with. J. It. Opie at. 6ft'in' the high jump won tho . jumpoff. Opie, the New Zealand pole vault champion and holder of tho best New Zealander’s performance, was another successful competitor, winning the. shot putt with a good performance ot 35ft 9in, the .Dunedin representative also being second in the high jump and javelin-throwing events. E. 11. Hounsell, tho wcll-knoWn Canterbury javelin thrower, showed great form in . this event, throwing. 143 ft lliri to take first' place. He also accounted, for tho half-mile in. the slow time of 2min 19sec. • ,E;;Robertson (Dunedin) - came with a late run in the mile to win in smin 12 l-ssec, while G 1 3-6 sec did not represent* the ability of W. Donaldson (Dunedin) in winning the quarter-, mile. Donaldson did not display the best of judgment, but ho showed distinct promise as a quarter-miler., Botj sprints went to P. Jowett (Christchurch), his 10 4-osec for 100yds representing a very good run under the conditions. He got away well and finished very strongly. Tho half-mile walk was'a slow race, won'by J. T. Chapman in 4min. The former New Zealand University champion athlete, Mr H. D., Morgan, was the starter, and Mr J. Armstrong superintendent. Messrs Brew, Scrivenear, Beath, and Roydhouse were the track judges, and Messrs Cartwright, Payne, Milne, and Pilling were the field judges. Messrs E. Hughes and E. P. Drew were the timekeepers, Mr A. P. Roydhouse tho announcer, and Messrs Brew, Cartwright, Armstrong, and Wilkinson the walking judges. Messrs King, A. E. Chapman, and Moloney were the call stewards. Dorman (Dunedin) 2 Time, smin 12 l-ssec. Dorman made the pace in the early stages, and he was always in a handy position. At the bell he led from J. O’Rourke (Christchurch) and Robertson, but along tho back stretch O’Rourke displaced Dorman,- with Robertson some yards back. Dorman made his bid 150yds from home, and led into the straight, O’Rourke fading over the last bit. Robertson came with a late run, and in a good finish beat Dorman by half a yard. O’Rourke well back third. ONE MILE RELAY, ‘ (880yds, 440yds, 220yds, 220yds.) Dunedin (E. Robertson, W. Donaldson, J. S. Allan, and J. H. Opie) * 1 Christchurch (E. R. Hounsell, E. Fancy, J. Lee, and P. Jowett) 2 This was a great finish to the day. Robertson and Hounsell had a close tussle over the first-half mile, but Hounsell made his run too soon, and after opening up a good gap could not stave off Robertson, who gave Donaldson the baton with half a yard to spare, the latter increasing the advantage to 10yds. When Opio took over for the last furlong Dunedin still led by 10yds, and Jowett made no impression on him, Dunedin winning by lOyds, a result which enabled them to divide the honours for the meeting with Christcurch, HALF-MILE WALK. J. T. Chapman (Dunedin) 1 R. Bickerstaff (Christchurch) 2 Time, 4min. The boxing tournament was held at Mamma Hall, which was packed by a largo crowd, and, winning four of the six bouts staged, Dunedin seen red two points towards the Tournament Shield, The bouts throughout were willingly contested, and, generally speaking, the standard was .a good deal higher than, usual in these tournaments, the experience gained by the Dunedin representatives in local amateur competitions standing them in good stead. ’ J. H. Opie (Dunedin), winner of the novice light-weight class at the 0.8.A.’s recent tournament, scored his second successive one-round, victory,, quickly • disposing of D. D. Daly by means of hard and clean punching. Tho heavy-weight bout was a goodnatured sort of. affair, with R. Gaudin (Christchurch) ladling out a good deal of punishment to an inexperienced competitor in J. T. Chapman, who took all that was coming to him and still came hack smiling . Gaudin won all the way. J. S. Thompson ■(Dunedin) won a hard-fought middle-weight contest with S. O. Field, and G., M'Fadyien (Dunedin) completely' outclassed J. H. O’Rourke in the , welter-weight division. The best boxing was provided" by R. ■G. Edwards (Christchurch) and ®. G. Sutton (Dunedin), in the light-weight division, a clever display being won by Edwards, a smart defensive fighter with a very solid left hand. Sutton fought well , though hardly up to the form ho showed at last week’s novice tournament. Substituting for another competitor at the last moment, G. Johnston. (Dunedin) acquitted himself well in winning tho feather-weight bout against A. E. East (Christchurch). Officials of the Otago Boxing Association had control of the tournament, tho MiG. being the president (Mr R. S. Glendining), who expressed tho pleasure of the association members at being able to assist tho Training College Clu'b at so successful,.a tournament. He congratulated the local representatives on their showing at tho recent novice tournament, and appealed for their support for the association’s next tournament about the middle qf July. Messrs R. Fulcher and Don Paterson acted as referees. Messrs R. Morris, R. Fulcher, and, Don Patterson were the judges, and Messrs T. Long and S. Brown were the timekeepers. Results:—. ...-'

FEATHER-WEIGHT. Gl Johnston ' (Dunedin) 9.0 outpointed A. E. East (Christchurch) 9.0. This was a willing encounter, East’s condition giving out in the closing stages. In the first round, East used his left well to the head, Johnston being unable to get his distance though he staged a good two-handed rally_towards the oiid of tho session. Jfi&st started to swing his punches in the second round, and dropped his guard, Johnston using a good right iippercut and hard right swing with good effect. East rushed in at the start of the third, but Johnston steadied him with an effective right-counter, and winning the second and third rounds, took the decision fairly comfortably. LIGHT-WEIGHT. R. G, Edwards (Christchurch) 9.13 beat R. G. Sutton (Dunedin) 9.13 on points. This bout provided a first-rate display of boxing, Edwards showing to considerable advantage in two-handed straight work and connecting .tellingly, with a very solid left. He let Sutton do the leading and then used his left hand extremely well. Edwards had the better of. the first round, scoring with several solid lefts to the chm and making good use of the ring. Sutton ran into two hard lefts at the start of the second round, but, Sutton connected with lefts and rights to the head towards the end of the stanza. Some willing rallies took place in the third round, but Edwards continued to do the cleaner work, and he earned the decision. WELTER-WEIGHT. G. M'Fadyien (Dunedin) 10.5 outpointed J. H. O’Rourke (Christchurch) 10.8. M'Fadyien completely outclassed O’Rourke, and it was obvious in the earlier stages that the Dunedin man was going easily, on his opponent, though ho hit with just about everything but the bucket. M'Fadyien connected repeatedly with a jabbing left and inside rights to head and body, O’Rourke back-pedalling' his way through the contest, though he came back occasionally with a right swing to the head. M'Fadyien won as he liked, but O’Rourke was game. MIDDLE-WEIGHT. J. S. Thomson (Dunedin) 11.0 heat S. R. Field (Christchurch) 11.0 on points. This was a hard-sloggiii" match, with Thomson doing nearly all of the forcing and using both hands to the head and body, though Field staged a grand-stand finish, with Thomson apparently tiring in the _ last round. Neither man punched with any great accuracy or judgment, but Thomson was the more effective, and he gained the decision. LIGHT HEAVY-WEIGHT. J. H. Opie (Dunedin) 11.10 beat D. I). Paly (Christchurch )11.3 on a technical knock-out in the first, round. Opie was the only one in this bout from the start, and a succession of straight lefts and hard rights to the head drove Daly to the ropes, where a hard right to the head put h‘m down for 8, the referee intervening and awarding the bout to Opie. HEAVY-WEIGHT. R. Gaudin (Christchurch 13.0 beat J. T. Chapman (12.0) on points. Gaudin was too rugged and strong for his taller and less experienced opponent, who was on the receiving end most of the way, but gamely stayed the distance in face of fairly severe punishment. Gaudin secured the decision;
